China Sees Rising Risk Of H1N1 This Winter

THE risk of an H1N1 pandemic in China will increase as the country nears its winter flu season, Health Minister Chen Zhu said yesterday.
"The interweaving between H1N1 and seasonal flu could markedly increase the risk of an H1N1 flu pandemic," he said at an international symposium in Beijing.
As the number of infected people increases, drug resistance cases, serious cases of swine flu and even fatalities would be "inevitable," he said.
The minister warned that the disease's impact on social and economic development should not be underestimated.
The Chinese mainland had reported 2,976 cases of swine flu as of yesterday afternoon.
More than 2,651 of those infected have recovered, and there have been no deaths.
Chen also said China will be able to produce enough swine flu vaccine for 65 million people by the end of this year.
