CHP notified by NHFPC of plague case in Gansu

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health last night (July 17) received notification from the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of a fatal case of pneumonic plague affecting a man aged 38 in Gansu.

The patient, who presented with fever and coughsince July 13, was admitted to a local hospital on July 15 for isolation and management. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on July 16. He was a farm worker and had exposure to marmots.

His clinical diagnosis was pneumonic plague...

Authorities in the city of Jiuquan, northwest China's Gansu Province, Thursday issued a level III emergency alert in response to the death of a resident from pneumonic plague.

The victim, surnamed Wang but whose gender was not stated, died after contracting the serious lung infection, said a publicity official from the Yumen Health and Family Planning Commission.

China has sealed off parts of its northwestern city of Yumen after a resident died of bubonic plague last week, state media has reported.

It said 151 people who came into direct contact with the victim were also placed in quarantine.

A 38-year-old victim was infected by a marmot, a wild rodent, and died on July 16.

Several districts of the city of about 100,000 people in Gansu province were subsequently turned into special quarantine zones, Xinhua said...

A town of 30,000 in China is prohibiting residents from leaving after a local man died from bubonic plague, state media announced Tuesday.

The town of Yumen, in the northwestern province of Gansu, also quarantined 151 people, China Central Television (CCTV) said, per the Agence France-Presse. The extreme precautions follow the July 16 death of a 38-year-old man who contracted the infectious disease after he found a dead marmot (a squirrel-like rodent) and fed it to his dog. So far, no additional cases have been reported.

"The city has enough rice, flour and oil to supply all its residents for up to one month," said CCTV, according to the AFP. "Local residents and those in quarantine are all in stable condition."...

Authorities barred 30,000 people living in Yumen in the northwestern province of Gansu from leaving, while road blocks prevented others from entering, after a 38-year-old died from plague last week.
