</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>A Hepatitis C epidemic has broken out in Woyang county in Bozhou, Anhui Province, and may have been caused by unsafe injections, said local health authorities.

According to a press release issued by the Anhui Provincial Health Bureau on Monday, 56 potential carriers of the virus were examined and 13 were tested positive.

Many of the Hepatitis C carriers are children, according to China National Radio, which reported parents in Woyang often take their kids to the nearby Miaoqian clinic in Maqiao, Henan Province, to see doctors.

After hearing rumors that some children in Maqiao, who go to the same clinic, contracted Hepatitis C, the parents in Woyang took their kids to local hospitals to get blood tests and found out their children are also infected.

According to the press release, the Anhui Provincial Health Bureau received a report from the Bozhou Health Bureau on Friday indicating a Hepatitis C epidemic had broken out. The initial investigation suggested the epidemic may have been caused by unsafe injections because all the carriers had intravenous injections at the private clinic in Henan Province.

HEFEI, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Six people were confirmed to be infected with the Hepatitis C virus in central Henan province Tuesday after a bordering region in Anhui province reported an outbreak of the disease Monday.

A total of 104 people in Maqiao township of Yongcheng city in Henan have tested positive for Hepatitis C virus in a preliminary screening. Of all, six have been confirmed as Hepatitis C patients in further tests, the Yongcheng city health bureau said in a statement Tuesday.

In Guoyang county in Anhui, 56 people, mostly children, have tested positive for the Hepatitis C virus in a preliminary screening. Further nucleic acid tests on 16 confirmed 13 were infected.

An initial investigation by local health authorities showed all 56 once received intravenous injections at a clinic in Maqiao township of Yongcheng city and the reuse of needles at the village clinic might have caused the outbreak.

Wu Wenyi, a man in his 60s who runs the village clinic in Maqiao township, is not a licensed doctor, the Yongcheng city health bureau said. A further investigation is underway to to see if he is behind the outbreak, it added.

BEIJING: More than 150 Chinese villagers, many of them children, may have been infected with Hepatitis C by a clinic that reused old needles, state media and local authorities said Wednesday.

Nineteen people who received treatment at the privately-run clinic in central China have tested positive for the disease, which the World Health Organisation said can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.

Another 98 are suspected to have been infected in Henan province, where the clinic is located, the state-run Beijing Times reported.
