Emergency health HQ is unveiled

By Cai Wenjun | 2009-2-14

HEALTH emergency headquarters opened in the city yesterday to coordinate Shanghai's response to serious health emergencies such as train crashes and mass outbreaks of disease.

The center will also work on disease prevention and the coordination of the city's health facilities.

The city has spent 100 million yuan (US$14.6 million) and three years building the IT system that will run the health center.

This means Shanghai is one of the first Chinese mainland cities to put in place a system to deal with infectious diseases that's completely managed by information technology.

Working with the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the new center is able to provide advanced warning about 78 diseases such as bird flu and hand, foot and mouth disease.

The center is located inside the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It is connected to the networks of 600 state-owned health facilities and supervises the health-related information - such as health certificates for workers - of 200,000 business, said officials from the Shanghai Health Bureau.

The center has collected 80,000 digital health records from around 50,000 public venues such as restaurants, shops and supermarkets, plus 10,000 companies and around 5,000 hospitals.

Through studying the operation of ambulances and local hospitals, the center's IT system will do real-time research on ambulance demand, the numbers of patients suffering various ailments and medical expenditure.
