8-year-old girl coughs for a week and turns into "white lung"

"Auntie, do you think the balloon I blew looks good?" Yoyo (pseudonym) sitting on the hospital bed held an orange balloon and smiled sweetly.
This day happened to be the Lantern Festival, and it was also the day she was discharged from the hospital. For this girl who just passed her 8th birthday, this peaceful Lantern Festival was not easy to come by.
From her admission to her discharge on January 20, Yoyo "lived" in Hangzhou First People's Hospital for 25 days. During this period, she experienced extremely severe pneumonia, and her lungs became "white lungs" in just over a day.
The god of death passed by many times. She used the highest standard life support system ECMO (extracorporeal lung support therapy) for 6 consecutive days, and also set a record for the smallest patient treated by ECMO in Hangzhou First People's Hospital.
Seeing Yoyo with a bright smile blooming again in front of her eyes, the medical staff beside her felt very relieved, and the mother who was sitting beside the bed secretly wet her eyes.

1. Critical
No one could have imagined that the disease would be so threatening. From peaceful days to hellish darkness, it was just a few days.
Around January 13 this year, Yoyo, who was in second grade, started coughing. It happened to be the review time for the end of the term, and the family wanted to let Yoyo hold on to the end of the term and watch it after the holiday. But Yunyou gradually couldn't hold on anymore, first cough, then fever...
As soon as the school was on holiday, my mother hurriedly took Yoyo to the hospital to see a doctor. After a few days of treatment, Yoyo's physical condition did not improve at all. On January 20, her family brought Yoyo, who had a fever for four days, to the Pediatrics Department of the First People's Hospital of Hangzhou, and the doctor took a chest film for her. The results of the filming showed that there was massive effusion in the right pleural cavity and pneumonia in the upper left.
At this time, Yoyo had been coughing for a week, her high fever persisted, and she had difficulty breathing. Only then did Yoyo's mother know that her daughter was not suffering from an ordinary cough, but suffered from severe pneumonia, and her condition developed faster than expected.
"Admission to the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) immediately!" The receiving doctor made an immediate decision.
After being admitted to the hospital, Yoyo's parents felt relieved. Who knows, Yoyo's situation suddenly took a turn for the worse, and the blood oxygen saturation dropped below 90%. Experts in pediatrics, PICU, ICU, and hematology immediately organized a multidisciplinary consultation for her. The treatment team performed ultrasound thoracentesis and pleural effusion catheter drainage on Yoyo for the first time. The yellow liquid gurgled out from the drainage tube, temporarily passing the first level. There, HFNC oxygen therapy, anti-infection, anti-inflammatory, etc. All in all...

The medical team consisting of chief physician Jiang Chunming, chief physician Yu Yanping, deputy chief physician Zheng Xuyang, head nurse Zhang Minfei, and nurse Zhou Yiqin of the First City Hospital of Pediatrics resolutely performed tracheal intubation and mechanical assisted ventilation on Youyou. However, Yoyo's oxygenation index has been below 100 - low blood pressure, unstable oxygen saturation, ARDS, respiratory failure, septic shock...
At this moment, Yoyo's life is hanging by a thread. The disease has progressed so rapidly, so fiercely, beyond all expectations.
2. Transfer
The disease showed its most hideous side.
In the case of inhaling pure oxygen, Yoyo's hypoxia symptoms are still difficult to relieve, and oxygenation cannot be maintained. In less than half a day, the normal lung tissue (the so-called "white lung") could no longer be seen in Yoyo's right lung; after another half a day, her left lung also became a "white lung", and her condition was extremely critical. Death occurs due to respiratory and circulatory failure.
"You must save her no matter what it costs, she is only 8 years old!" Yoyo's parents cried for the doctor.
The treatment process of Yoyo made countless people worried. But even in the most hopeless moments, the treatment team never gave up hope. Right now, there is one last treatment left - ECMO, the highest standard life support system. Although the First City Hospital has rich experience in ECMO treatment, it is the first time it has been used on an 8-year-old child.
Get on ECMO! This decision requires courage and courage. The treatment team decided to fight anyway!
At one o'clock in the morning on January 21, Yoyo was pushed into the ICU from the PICU and started a new round of struggle against fate.
A green channel was opened for Yoyo, and the entire transfer process took less than 10 minutes. At the same time, a treatment team composed of ICU chief physician Zhu Ying, deputy chief physician Zeng Xiaokang, chief physician Gu Qiao, and chief physician Huang Changpin of vascular surgery was formed. They rushed over from home at 12:00 in the morning and successfully established VVECMO for Youyou. cycle. The doctor told Yoyo's mother that Yoyo's condition was still in critical condition, but Yoyo's parents saw a glimmer of hope.
Yoyo lying on the ICU bed was deeply sedated, her whole body was full of tubes, and the beating indexes on various instruments affected the hearts of the entire treatment team. After being connected to the artificial lung, Yoyo's blood oxygen saturation increased to over 95%, and her compressed lung was temporarily rested.
Moving forward in the hopeless darkness requires decisive courage, a superb level, and the blessing of fate. The sleeping Yoyo also showed her tenacious vitality. With ECMO support, her lung consolidation was significantly reduced and her lung function improved. After 6 days of ECMO operation, Yoyo successfully got out of ECMO and turned to a ventilator to assist her breathing. All of Yoyo's vital signs were stable, and she passed the most dangerous stage.
In just 6 days, he was successfully offline, and his lung condition improved significantly. Even Chief Physician Zhu Ying, who has been engaged in rescue work for many years, exclaimed, "This is a miracle!"
On January 29, Yoyo was transferred back to the PICU for further treatment. For her, there is still a long way to go, and she still has to overcome the barriers of infection and recovery.
After that, Yoyo continued to recover at an astonishing speed. On February 1st, after a comprehensive evaluation by the treatment team, it was judged that Yoyo had the ability to breathe on her own and could try to go offline! Yunyou was finally able to rely on her own lungs to breathe on her own, and she woke up from her deep sleep!
It was a miracle, the happy ending everyone had been hoping for.

3. Rehabilitation
After 6 days on ECMO and 10 days on the ventilator, Yoyo ushered in a new life.
On February 12, Yoyo started pulmonary rehabilitation training. This girl with big eyes has become the "group pet" in the ward. In order to encourage her to do pulmonary rehabilitation training, everyone specially customized a special rehabilitation method for her - blowing balloons. These balloons are not "games" for children, but "small balloons, big effects" for exercising lung function.
In order to stimulate Yoyo's interest in training, the nurse specially bought colorful balloons and let her blow a few a day. "Come on, can you blow a red one for me?" "I like blue, can you give me a blue one?"
With the encouragement of the nurses and sisters, Yoyo's balloons became bigger and bigger.
Spring is blooming, and hope grows quietly. Yunyou recovered at an astonishing speed, and a bright smile appeared on the face of this smiling girl.
On February 15, Yoyo was finally discharged from the hospital. The critically ill pneumonia patient who was on the verge of death was just "dragged" back by the medical staff.

Dr. Yu Yanping said that although it had been expected before, when the day really came, the entire rescue team was very happy. "In practicing medicine, there are always countless desperate moments. The longer you work, the more you can feel the importance of perseverance. You must not give up until the last minute." A simple sentence expresses the hearts of countless doctors.
