China drought worsens in parched north

Across northern China swathes of land are dry, parched by drought.

In some areas these are the driest conditions in a lifetime. Snowfalls in recent days have helped a little, but still, across huge areas of land, water is in short supply.

The countryside is dotted with empty dams.

China is the world's biggest grower and consumer of wheat. In normal years it is self-sufficient. But if it has to import grain this year then that will have an impact far afield.

Already just the warnings of a possible shortfall in China's crop have put pressure on global wheat prices.

Water releases from the Three Gorges reservoir, which is upstream from the drought areas, will be increased by 10-20 per cent today,

The monsoon rains did not come this year, and officials say rainfall in Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang is at its lowest level in more than 50 years.

Bulk shipping carriers were banned on May 11 from using a 228-kilometre stretch of the Yangtze because of low water levels.

1,400 small lakes have become so shrivelled that authorities have declared them “dead” and banned any water pumping,

Chicago Board of Trade corn has climbed 80 percent since the start of May last year, while wheat has risen around 50 percent. Last week alone corn and wheat jumped more than 10 percent on expectations of a global squeeze in supplies.
