According to the ISP, 2,185 cases of respiratory viruses were analyzed at the national level. Thus, there was an exponential increase in pathologies in the span of a week.

The second region has experienced an increase in the circulation of respiratory viruses in recent weeks, including adenovirus, parainfluenza, metapneumovirus and influenza A.

According to a report by the ISP, from March 26 to April 1, 2,185 cases of respiratory viruses were analyzed nationwide, of which 379, 17.3%, tested positive for some viral agents. Compared to the previous year, there has been an exponential increase in cases of adenovirus, parainfluenza, influenza B and metapneumovirus.

According to El Mercurio of Antofagasta, the ISP detected two cases of Influenza A, one case of Adenovirus and nine of RSV in the last week of March. However, for the first week of April, 39 cases of respiratory viruses were registered in the region.

Dr. Angello Retamal, an academic at the University of Antofagasta and a young researcher at the Millennium Institute in Immunology and Immunotherapy (IMII), attributes this increase in the circulation of respiratory viruses to the relaxation of sanitary measures, such as the use of the mask.

Retamal explains that the use of the mask was positive to contain the spread of Covid-19, but that by eliminating this measure, people began to interact more with others and, therefore, increased the circulation of viruses.

"All fermented products such as kombucha, yogurts that have probiotics, microorganisms that help to be in a more alert state and that is natural medicine and that also allow you to be in a certain state," Angello Retamal recommended.

Minsal warned of a "significant increase" in respiratory patients

May 24, 2023
The Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday that the incidence of respiratory diseases has increased "significantly" compared to last year, a situation that, on the eve of the beginning of winter, some experts predict that it could complicate the pictures of children and vulnerable people.

"There is a significant increase in global positivity, which has grown by 52.2%," said the Undersecretary of Healthcare Networks, Fernando Araos, at a press conference.

The authority specified that 46% of cases correspond to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), followed by influenza (30%).

"The most affected age group are children under the age of four," Araos explained.

Hospitalizations of minors have risen by 15.4% compared to this same date in 2022 and the national occupancy of pediatric beds is at 90%.

The regions of Biobío, La Araucanía and Metropolitana are "the most affected" by the increase in cases, said the undersecretary. "A VERY COMPLEX SITUATION"

"It is a very complex situation that we are living here," warned Claudio Baeza, director of the Regional Hospital of Concepción, interviewed by Lo Que Queda del Día de Cooperativa.

The physician said that "we are close to 74% at the level of the region of increase in cases, with a very pronounced curve characterized by a high demand in the emergency services."

"We went from pediatric respiratory emergencies from 120 on average to 230 and, the most worrying thing, is the severity of them, given the circulation mainly of the respiratory syncytial virus: 30% of patients require a hospitalization bed in pediatrics and, even more complex, many of them are already falling into invasive mechanical ventilation," the director said.

"The highest infection rate occurs from three to five years," he added.

Arica Hospital will be a sentinel center for monitoring the circulation of respiratory viruses

The Arica Dr. Juan Noé Regional Hospital will be a new sentinel center for monitoring the circulation of viruses that cause respiratory diseases, such as influenza, SARS-CoV2 or syncycial, which will have a direct impact on the implementation of actions in the care network to respond to the increase in these pathologies in winter.

The professional highlighted that the hospital has the capacity to detect up to eight different respiratory viruses with a single sample, where the exams of the CESFAM sentinel Iris Véliz are also processed.

"This will serve for the management of the SSA to monitor when the greatest increases in respiratory diseases occur, if there are more serious cases and to be able to make decisions, for example, to increase the provision of beds or increase testing," Olivares said.

MOH Chile: Winter Campaign: more resources, reconversion of beds and reinforcement of APS, are part of the measures promoted by MINSAL

May 24, 2023
Since February of this year, the vaccination campaign has been strengthened and all the country's health services are converting and making beds more complex.

Faced with the increase in cases of respiratory viruses, which currently amount to 2,296, a figure higher than 2022, in the same period, between May 14 and 20, where 1,026 cases were registered, the health authorities reported on the operation of the public network and the winter campaign strategy.

The Minister of Health, Andrea Albagli, said that "we have seen that this increase has been sustained and continued to date, with a more pronounced increase in the last four weeks, which means that we are currently with a greater viral circulation compared to this same date last year and with the pre-pandemic years," the authority said.
