Chikungunya suspected in Chimbel fever cases

PANJIM, AUG 2 ? A number of viral fever cases in Indira Nagar, Chimbel in the last two weeks has raised suspicion of Chikungunya fever. However, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has ruled out the possibility of the Chikungunya virus.
The Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has sent around five blood serum samples from the Indira Nagar area to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. Although the results are yet to be received, the DHS seems to be quite confident that Goa is free of the Chikungunya virus and claims that adequate preventive measures have been taken. Chikungunya is a virus carried by a gluttonous mosquito that has already dined on an infected person.
Dr Deepak Kabadi, deputy director of the DHS National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) said that Chikungunya fever has hit neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka but he ruled out any cases of Chikungunya fever in Goa. He said that in Goa people have been reporting cases of viral fever from places like Ponda, Curchorem among others.
People have begun to suspect any fever to be Chikungunya fever, he said.
Dr Kabadi said that the Primary Health Centre there is monitoring the viral fever cases in Chimbel. The DHS is also continuing with fogging and anti larval measures in the area, he said. He said that the persons whose blood samples have been sent have recovered from the viral fever.
Sources in Chimbel maintain that the source of the fever is neighbouring State and that hundreds of people have complained of ?mysterious fever?. The health authorities are planning to start a survey of the infected persons. There is large number of migrant population from Karnataka in Indira Nagar, the others being from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and UP.
