CHENNAI: About 11,000 people in 17 districts in the State are affected by chikungunya but there is no cause for alarm as urgent steps are being taken to contain the disease, said Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran here on Wednesday.

Talking to newsmen, the Minister said 208 medical teams with 10,000 personnel were sent to the affected districts and they were working round the clock. In the rest of the 12 districts, preventive measures were being taken up in full swing. So far there was not a single case of death due to the disease. Unfortunately there was no preventive vaccine for the disease.

The disease, caused mainly by mosquitoes, had spread from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, where more than five lakh people were affected in the last one year. People from Tamil Nadu who visited those States might have carried the disease virus and spread it to people here. Symptoms of the disease were fever along with body and joint aches, which would last for four or five days.

The Minister said blood samples collected from 229 affected people were sent to the National Virus Laboratory, Pune. The results tested positive in 27 cases. As mosquitoes bred in stagnant water were the carriers of the disease, people were advised to avoid water stagnation in their areas. The Government had also formed rapid response teams in districts, which would rush to villages on hearing any case of the disease and would suitably advice the primary health centre concerned.

Doctor posts
The Minister said steps were being taken to fill all vacancies in government hospitals. About 1,500 doctors had already been selected by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and they would get postings soon. The Government would take a decision on regularising the services of 1,700 doctors, appointed on contract basis by the previous Government. Similarly, 2,500 nurse vacancies would also be filled and the pending promotion list would be released soon.

Is it me or does this sound a bit excessive for 11,000 cases a disease, in essence 1 medical personal per case?

In my opinion the situation is much worse than being reported and this response is indicitative of tens of thousands of cases in Tamil Nadu.

Re: Chikungunya: CHENNAI

I agree. Seems a lot excessive and I would suspect that there are far more cases that are not being reported.

CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation health officials are on alert to fresh outbreak of chikungunya in the city limits.

Over the past week, health workers listed 123 persons across the city showing symptoms of the disease spread by mosquitoes. In North Chennai, comprising Tondiarpet, Basin Bridge and Pulianthope zones, 57 suspected cases were reported. The latest ones came from Anna Nagar.

Starting Monday, the civic agency launched early morning fogging operations in vulnerable areas such as slums, targeting mosquitoes active during the day. Rapid action teams have been formed for each of the 10 zones. Each consists of an entomologist, a sanitary inspector and health workers. Eighteen fogging machines have been deployed to spray a mixture of pyrethrum insecticide and diesel fuel from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Residents are being sensitised to breeding of mosquitoes. The Aedes aegypti species that spreads the disease breeds in fresh water.

The symptoms are sudden fever, severe arthralgia (joint pain), headache, chills and rashes, almost similar to that of dengue. Apart from medication, patients are asked to increase intake of fluids and take adequate rest.

Chikungunya outbreak was first suspected in the city last month when there were reports that the disease was spreading from the Andhra Pradesh border.

The civic agency collected blood samples from 22 persons and sent them to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. Four samples tested positive for the virus.
Alpha Virus causes the disease. It was first isolated in 1953 in Tanzania and in Asia at Bangkok in 1958. The name `chikungunya' is derived from the Swahili word, meaning `which bends up,' referring to the posture of the patients suffering from the disease.

Chikungunya symptoms in Anakaputhur?

Staff Reporter
<TABLE width="100%" bgColor=#d0f0ff border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>Residents have been complaining of acute joint ache and fever </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

TAMBARAM: Scores of residents of Kamarajapuram in Anakaputhur Municipality have been complaining of acute joint ache, fever, profuse sweating, symptoms of chikungunya disease that was reported in some parts of the city in late May and early June.

Residents complained of the abysmally low facilities available at the Pozhichalur Primary Health Centre and also the poor response from workers of the Anakaputhur Municipality. Enquiries revealed that almost every house in Annai Mary First and Second Streets of Kamarajapuram had at least two or three people inside their houses taking rest, unable to even walk due to acute pain in their knee joints.

A motorcycle mechanic said his wife first complained of the acute joint pain and later fever and he contracted the infected from her. When their son returned from work on Thursday, he too was affected, the mechanic said. His neighbour - a couple employed in a stone quarry and their daughter too complained of similar symptoms. All of them initially took medication from private medical practitioners in Pammal area. One of them told reporters that people visiting his clinic with joint ache and high fever was on the rise in the past ten days.

He had not recommended blood tests to confirm if it could be chikungunya as the symptoms were not alarming, the doctor said. Authorities at the St. Anthony's Middle School in the same locality complained that the attendance of students had sharply dipped and when they enquired with their parents, they came to know that children too complained of these symptoms. They further added that several residents from the locality had visited Edathavaazhu, a Christian pilgrim centre on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border and may have contracted the infection there.

Residents of Kamarajapuram said that nothing less than 100 people in the locality complained of similar symptoms. They complained that despite being aware of the problem, the Anakaputhur Municipality's response was lethargic. Further, due to the inadequate facilities and medicines available at the Pozhichalur Primary Health Centre, they were subject to a lot of problems, residents added.

B. Velayudham, Chairman of Anakaputhur Muncipality, said chikungunya symptoms was restricted only to one pocket and workers of the local body were working round the clock to ensure that it did not spread to other areas. Disinfectants and insecticides were being sprayed in problem areas after taking equipment on hire, Mr. Velayudham said and added the local body was planning to buy equipment.
Officials of the Kancheepuram district health department said the cases were not new and also suspect that the residents might have contracted it from elsewhere, as pointed out by the school authorities. Further, all efforts were taken to keep the problems under check they said and added that the PHC at Pozhichalur was well stocked with the necessary medicines.
