Monday June 11 2007 00:41 IST <SMALL>T?PURAM: Central Health Director Dr PK Srivastava has said that nobody had died due to chikungunya in the state.

He was speaking to reporters here on Sunday night after discussions with Health Minister PK Sreemathi on the measures for containing the epidemic.

All the deaths in the state were fever-related deaths. Chikungunya epidemic can be contained within ten days, Srivastava said.

The Health Minister told reporters after the meeting said that disciplinary action would be taken against the secretaries of local bodies which failed to take steps for waste disposal. Though most local bodies had taken steps for waste disposal in the wake of the recent epidemic, some had not taken effective steps, she said.

Sreemathi said that the epidemic which had earlier rocked Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts had spread to Ernakulam district also. There are reports of the fever reaching Muvattupuzha in the district.

The Central team had said that the mosquitoes that caused the disease could be controlled within 10 to 12 days, the Minister said.

The Government does not have the exact number of the patients who are undergoing treatment for the disease in private hospitals. In Pathanamthitta district alone, 146 cases had been reported from private hospitals, she said.

Dengue death rose to 39 in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 11: With the first report of dengue related death in Kerala, the toll in viral infection rose to 39, even as the Defence medical teams plunged into action in the worst effected districts, setting up medical camps and helping the state medical personnel in vector control and sanitation measures.

The first case of dengue death was reported from Kottayam district, where the largest cases of viral fever had been detected, sources in the Health Directorate said.

Though the government had confirmed 39 deaths due to the epidemic, the local media put the toll at more than 80.

Meanwhile, a high-level scientific team from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, today left for Alappuazha and would be engaged in investigating positive cases of chikungunya and dengue, Defence sources said.

Apart from Alappuzha, the team would visit Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Kollam. Lt Col Rajesh (epidemiologist), Col Satish (virologist), an entomologist and a microbiologist are in the team, sources said.

With one more camp at Pathanamthitta, the Defence had established two medical camps here. Another medical team from the Pangode Military camp today left for Kollam to identify areas to set up a medical camp there from tomorrow morning.

The Defence teams were also engaged in fogging and spraying to contain the spread of mosquitoes in the affected regions, defence sources said and added that they were now concentrating on the curative and preventive aspects.

A report from Kochi said the medical team at Kottayam attended to about 60 patients yesterday besides undertaking fogging and spraying activities at Veyur. The team treated about 600 patients at a camp site in Punjar and 550 patients at a camp in Erumelli.

The medical team in Idukki also held two camps-- first at the Travancore Tea Rubber Estate in Peruvandanam Gram Panchayat dispensary where about 200 patients were attended to, all with similar symptoms of chikungunya, besides about 10 in-patients, the report said. The team later visited Cheravalli where about 230 patients have received medical treatment.

Meanwhile, a third medical team fully equipped with medicines and equipment was ready at the Naval base in Kochi for deployment to Muvattupuzha as required by the health authorities there.

Report from Kottayam said Health Minister P K Sreemathy visited Kanjirappally, Koottickal, Mundakkayam, Erattupetta, Meenachil and other areas in Kottayam district and evaluated the steps taken by the authorities.

The total number of suspected cases of chikungunya was 7,128, and as many as 13,880 cases of viral fever had been detected in the state till yesterday, sources said. The figure is likely to go up with more cases being reported from the affected regions.

Fever continues to cause concern in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 12, 2007

The spread of viral fever in Kerala continued to cause concern as two more deaths were reported from worst-hit Pathanamthitta district on Tuesday, taking the state-wide toll to at least 52 in the past two months.

State health authorities stepped up efforts to contain the problem with the help of medical teams from the armed forces, which have been active since Sunday.

Fresh cases of fever were reported from Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kollam and Kozhikode districts, where people with symptoms of chikungunya and other types of fever continued to pour into hospitals.

Health department sources said 26,000 people came to hospitals across the state to seek treatment today. The count of patients in government hospitals included 1,441 in Kottayam and 556 in Pathanamthitta. Nearly 400 cases of suspected chikungunya were reported from different parts of Kerala.

Army medical teams moved their camps to new areas in the disease-hit districts, where they used mobile service units to reach interior areas.

A week-long sanitation drive was launched across Kerala with the participation of political parties, youth outfits and NGOs.

Health Minister PK Sreemathi directed authorities down the line to remain alert in view of the monsoon gaining momentum and bringing widespread rains all over the state.

Viral infection under control in Kerala

Friday June 15 2007 00:00 IST
UNI

T?PUAM: Preventive measures against the dreaded viral fever in Kerala continued for the fifth day on Thursday even as the government said that the outbreak was under control.

New cases had declined and the number of inpatients in the hospitals had come down drastically, sources in the health ministry said.

Meanwhile, the number of viral cases has come down to 22,400, from 26,000 cases on Wednesday, they said. A total of 188 chikungunya cases had been confirmed in the state while the suspected cases were about 8,000.

They said though there was a decrease in chikungunya cases in the state, Kottayam district showed a slight increase in the number of cases.

Apart from the five cases of dengue confirmed till now, no fresh cases were reported on Thursday.

The defence medical teams, which are aiding the state health officials in containing the spread of epidemic, continued with their medical camps, vector control and sanitation measures in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts.

The week long sanitation campaign, which got underway on Tuesday, to check the spread of the viral fever, was going on a war footing in almost all the districts in the state.

The state government had on Wednesday decided to provide Rs 1 crore each to Kottayam and Pathanamthita districts for vector control activities and sanitary measures. Kottayam and Pathanamthitta were the worst effected by the viral fever epidemic. The other effected districts would be getting Rs 50 lakh each he said.

Meanwhile, opposition leader in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy appealed to the state government to take immediate steps to open more medical camps for the effective management of the situation in the viral fever affected areas.

Talking to newspersons after making an on the spot study at the viral fever affected areas in Kottayam, he alleged that the situation was very serious.

Even though the doctors and other para medical staff members were rendering meritorious service, the state government had failed in giving proper coordination, he charged.
