Chandigarh A day after the outbreak of diarrhoea was detected in Mauli Jagran, as many as 222 residents of the area have been found to be suffering from the disease. Teams from the Health Department held a medical check up camp in the area as well as conducted house to house survey today.
Eight patients, four adults and four children, were referred to the hospital for treatment. During the camp the team of doctors examined 341 people including 151 children. As many as 2765 houses were surveyed out of which 222 cases were detected. On Sunday, nine patients had been referred to the hospitals and 81 cases of mild diarrhoea were detected.

It was after the death of two people that a scare was created in the area. While a 13-year-old boy had died a few days back due to diarrhoea, another person who died yesterday with symptoms of diarrhoea was also a chronic alcoholic.

2 residents of Vikas Nagar died with symptoms of diarrhoea
In Vikas Nagar two people have died over the past two days with symptoms of acute diarrhoea and vomiting. 13 people from the same locality are hospitalised with the same symptoms and the local MC councilor estimates that 20 people from her ward died of water-borne diseases in June.
One more death has been reported from Vikas Nagar, a locality of Mauli Jagran. The victim?s family described her symptoms as acute diarrhoea and vomiting over 72 hours. It is the second death in the locality within the past two days. The deceased have been identified as 45-year-old Durgawati Devi and 55-year-old Diwan Chand.

Two more residents of Vikas Nagar are dead. They succumbed on Tuesday after suffering from acute diarrhea. One of the victims died with 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. People are asking, what is the disease that is stalking this corner of the city.
A death on Sunday. A death on Monday. And now two deaths on Tuesday. The scene of these grim statistics is Vikas Nagar, a locality in Maulijagran. Tuesday?s victims have been identified as 19 year old Vijay Kumar and a 2-year-old girl, Kashish.

Even as diarrhoea continues to spread across the city spanning the peripheral colonies as well as urban areas alike, the UT Health Department?s nodal wing to tackle vector borne and water borne diseases refuses to acknowledge the reports of deaths. So far unconfirmed reports have put together the death toll due to diarrhoea at six, including Durgawati (47), Diwan Singh (55), Vijay Kamat(19) and Kashih (2). However, the Health Department is yet to ascertain if the cause of death is diarrhoea and is not owning these deaths.

In a significant development, the UT health department ? which was trying to find out the exact causes of diarrhoea outbreak in the city starting from Vikas Nagar in Mauli Jagran ? has found that the water supplied to this area by the Municipal Corporation was unfit for human consumption

However, despite repeated attempts, officials of the Municipal Corporation including medical Officer of Health (MOH), Chief engineer, Public Health officials could not be contacted for their comments. Over 1,400 cases of diarrhoea have been reported from Vikas Nagar alone in the past four day. Cases of the disease are also being reported from other sectors in the city.

Four persons of the area have already succumbed to the disease even as the authorities continue to deny the reports of any deaths.

Meanwhile, 241 fresh cases were reported on Thursday out of which 93 are children. Out of these, six patients were referred to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16 and six to Government hospital, Manimjara.

Seven more water samples collected from diarrhoea-hit Mauli Jagran by the UT health department have failed the test. Results of 23 samples have been declared so far, of which eight have been found unfit for human consumption.
The samples were sent to the microbiology department of


Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 (GMCH-32) for tests. Sources said the microbiological analysis of the samples brought out that the bacteria content in the water was extremely high. In some of the failed samples, the bacteria content, measured in terms of most probable number (MPN) per 100 ml, is as high as 1,800.

Despite change in weather conditions, diarrhoea cases at Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, continue to rise with 103 fresh cases being reported on Saturday. These include 41 children and 62 adults who had reached the medical camp set up for such patients. With this, the number of people suffering from diarrhoea in the area alone has reached nearly 2,000.

Week later, MC fails to detect cause of water contamination

Two days after the Municipal Corporation isolated a part of Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, where more cases of diarrhoea were reported, the root cause of contamination of water is yet undetected. The water supply pipelines in the area have been dug up. The leakage in the pipeline, if any, that led to water getting contaminated has not been found till now.

As many as 103 cases of diarrhoea were reported on Sunday at the medical camp at Vikas Nagar. Of these nine were referred to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, and one patient was referred to Civil Hospital, Manimajra. All civil dispensaries remained open on Sunday.

Possible cause of water contamination identified, says MC

Municipal Corporation officials on Tuesday identified the possible source of contamination of the water supply that led to cases of diarrhoea in Mauli Jagran.

During inspection conducted by the officials in the area, it was found that a mosque had taken an illegal water connection for its toilet directly from the water supply line.

At a few other places, booster pumps were found connected to the water pipelines. The cause of contamination will be confirmed once the results of the water samples are received.

Diarrhea cases on the rise in Mohali

MOHALI: Despite of various efforts of the Mohali district administration, diarrhea menace is going on unabated in various parts of Mohali. So far at least 350 patients with diarrhea symptoms, from different parts of Mohali, have reported in the district hospital here, out of which nearly 100 were diagnosed of diarrhea.

Health officials have also collected samples of drinking water from different localities and have have found contamination in it.

Chandigarh According to reports received from different health Institutions in UT-Chandigarh, no clustering of diarrhoea cases has been received. The total number of diarrhoea cases reported today from the Civil Hospital, Manimajra was 9, out of which 2 cases were admitted in the hospital. 6 other cases of mild diarrhoea were reported from the Civil Dispensary in Maulijagran. 1 of these was referred to GMSH-16.
