Frontier Ranch camper had swine flu

A female teenager from Texas is the first confirmed H1N1 (swine flu) case in Chaffee County public health director Susan Ellis said Monday.
The teen was with a group from Texas which arrived June 14 at Frontier Ranch west of Nathrop.
She was evaluated at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida and tested for influenza June 17. Subsequent positive testing for H1N1 by Colorado health officials was confirmed June 19, Ellis said.
Because she travelled from Texas before onset of the illness, Colorado health department personnel classified the confirmation as a Texas case, Ellis said.
A total of 458 teenagers and leaders were at the camp last week.
Ellis said, "By the end of the week, 50 teenagers developed flu-like symptoms which included fever, headache, cough, lethargy and muscle aches."
Camp personnel said most of the individuals had mild symptoms which resolved within 24-48 hours.
Three people were treated and tested positive for seasonal flu and released from the emergency room at HRRMC.
Their influenza test samples were sent to the state for H1N1 testing Monday, and results should be available later today, Ellis said.
Chaffee County Public Health personnel provided antiviral medication from the state stockpile for people at risk for flu complications, Ellis said. Isolation for sick campers was provided by the camp.
Antiviral medication was administered to camp staff members and medical personnel to inhibit transmission of the influenza virus.
Ellis said all campers returned home June 20 and by Monday there were no more reported illnesses.
By June 13 there have been 103 confirmed H1N1 cases and 11 probable cases in Colorado.
In Pueblo County, about 14 campers and an adult at San Isabel Scout Ranch experienced flu-like symptoms last week. Tests confirmed H1N1 in two people and county health officials distributed antiviral medications.
