It seems the best way to track the severity of H1N1 is to monitor hospitalizations based on real time ICU information. I know nurses daily enter a
ton of information. Is there an accessible site that combines multiple (statewide) hospital information based on illness type?

My husband is an IT manager for OPH in Louisiana, and I asked him your question and he started chuckling, which I take to be a no - at least not here, or none of which he's aware that would be that simplistic. There are ways to access info, but not for the general public.

I think part of the issue is that H1N1 isn't technically diagnosed until a specimen hits the CDC - until then, it's presumptive based on symptoms. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.) The H1N1 confirmations come over from the CDC to the state (in addition to the physicians) in batches - and from there the info is compiled, etc.

From a nursing perspective, I do know that administrative nursing personnel do have a finger on the pulse of all the diagnoses that are inpatient in any given shift - but I have never seen anything like that logged anywhere that it could be accessed in real time by the general public.

I'm curious to see what other responses come to this thread.

I have a related question - does the general public have any way of finding out how many ventilators and ECMO machines a hospital has? Do we have any way of assessing the hospital's ability to care for patients with severe pandemic flu?
