Four Cases Of H1N1 Confirmed At SDSU
Posts The H1N1 virus is confirmed on a KELOLAND campus.
Four South Dakota State University students have come down with the illness. School officials tell us two live in dorms and two live off-campus, and one is now back in school and feeling well.
The news is heightening awareness on campuses across the state.
Augustana College students found out this afternoon that four students on another South Dakota campus have come down with H1N1.
"I heard it was in a bunch of other states and hadn't heard about it in this area, but now it's a lot closer. It'll probably get here faster now," said freshman Kieran Waltner.
"I don't know, kind of surprised. Just gotta wash your hands more, stay safe," said Brandon Inla, also a freshman.
That's the advice from health officials, and also from campus administrators who've been in contact with students about the risk even before the fall semester began.
"Four cases does not seem great. I was just checking Minnesota State University in Minneapolis and they have six cases," said Dean of Student Affairs Jim Bies
According to Bies, Augustana doesn't plan to quarantine students if an outbreak occurs, but staff members are developing a way to get campus meals to anyone who's sick. They?ll also notify all students and staff if there is a confirmed case. Otherwise, administrators will monitor information from health officials, and keep an eye on surrounding schools.
"Every week we're going to learn more from experiences on other campuses," Bies said.
And it may not be too long before this campus is affected, too.
Bies says around a fourth of the student body got a seasonal flu shot on campus this week, and they're offering another clinic next week.
