MSD Animal Health presents results of a vaccine against Schmallenberg virus to protect sheep and cattle

MSD Animal Health announces the successful development of a candidate vaccine against the Schmallenberg virus. Immediately after the first cases appeared at the end of 2011, MSD Animal Health started the emergency development program.

The vaccine is based on wild-type Schmallenberg virus that has been inactivated and contains an adjuvant that stimulates the immune response. In the studies to date, safety and efficacy has been demonstrated in calves, lambs and pregnant ewes.

A vaccine to protect livestock against the Schmallenberg virus could be available within weeks, Farmers Weekly has learned.

Studies on the vaccine, produced by MSD Animal Health, have shown it can protect pregnant calves, lambs and ewes.

Farmers Weekly understands the company has submitted an application for regulatory approval and licensing of the vaccine for commercial use.

The government's body that licenses and registers vaccines, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), is now reviewing the application.

An industry source said: "The VMD received an application from MSD for a Schmallenberg virus vaccine in September. A provisional licence potentially has a 60-day process to go through. This means a vaccine could be ready by mid-November.

Schmallenberg virus vaccine moves step closer


MSD Animal Health has submitted an application to license a Schmallenberg virus (SBV) vaccine, although it has refused to confirm reports it would be on the market in a matter of weeks.

Our sister publication, Veterinary Times, reported in June that a vaccine for SBV could be available by the end of the year, but articles in the farming press that it could be available in weeks are unfounded, according to a statement from MSD.

David Butler, press spokesman for MSD Animal Health, said: "MSD is working extremely hard to create it and is working with the regulatory authority to ensure a licence is available without delay, but that's all we are able to say at this point".

VMD provides information on MSD application

After renewed calls from the farming industry the Veterinary Medicines Directive (VMD) has released information regarding a possible vaccine for Schmallenberg.

The directorate has taken the unusual step of sharing information regarding the MSD's application for its 'Bovilis SBV' vaccine. Usually the directorate is unable to comment on any applications it has received, or their current status, for reasons of commercial confidentiality. However in light of the media interest surrounding the possible vaccine, MSD has allowed the VMD to release certain information.

The VMD has confirmed it received an application for a provisional marketing authorisation at the end of August 2012. The application was then completed and validated in mid September 2012 following the provision of further data.

According to the directorate the initial assessment was completed, and further enquiries were sent to the company in question towards the end of November 2012. After receiving a response at the end of January 2013, the VMD are now assessing this information.

A VMD spokesman said: "Despite the good progress, at this stage it is not possible to provide an indication of when the vaccine may be authorised.



"The VMD recognises the impact on individual animals and farmers a disease such as Schmallenberg can have.

"The VMD will operate timelines for the remaining stages of consideration of the application mindful of this while ensuring, through our rigorous scientific assessment process, that proper care is taken to ensure that any vaccine is safe for the relevant livestock."
