DETROIT, March 10 Michigan's efforts to cut its Canada goose population by hunting have had an unintended effect -- driving the geese into populated areas.

In suburbs around Detroit like Farmington Hills, hunting the geese is not a possibility. Local officials have turned to other methods, including feeding bans and annual goose roundups, to cut their numbers, The Detroit News reports.

Canada geese have become residents of much of the northeast and Midwest in recent years, instead of migrating to Canada for the summer. Fast-growing suburbs have created a lot of good goose habitat, and the large flocks produce large quantities of goose poop that fouls beaches and golf courses.

Oh my God, I hate them, said Beth Sadoff of Waterford Township, who belongs to a homeowner ' s association that pays for goose relocation. In Berkley, a pond at Roseland Park Cemetery was filled with cement to discourage geese from dropping in.
