Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease continue to rise among children in Manitoba and across the country, but an infectious disease specialist says it’s not surprising to see the virus spread after two years of pandemic restrictions.

“Over the past couple of years, we probably forgot about the routine, regular, circulating viral foes that we see in children — one of which being hand, foot and mouth disease,” Dr. Justin Penner told Global News.

“We certainly could have predicted this — it’s not unheard of after two years of a pandemic, when people aren’t mixing or aren’t in school or daycare.”...

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease cases in Alberta childcare centres see dramatic increase

Alberta Health Services says it is seeing an uptick in hand-foot-and-mouth disease in childcare centres.

In 2021/2022, the province has received 156 reports of HFM in childcare facilities, 84 of which were in the Edmonton Zone, compared to 61 outbreaks, 31 of which were in the Edmonton Zone in the previous year.

In Alberta in 2018/2019, there were 90 outbreaks and in 2017/2018, there were 120.

The president of the pediatric department of the Alberta Medical Association says the increase is likely due to increased social interactions after the pandemic...

Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease that lead kids to get outpatient treatment at Winnipeg's Children's Hospital are on the rise following two dormant years during the pandemic, Shared Health says.

Last month saw 138 such cases compared to 29 the month before. By contrast, there were 18 cases treated in hospital in 2021 and 24 in 2020, a spokesperson for the organization, which oversees health-care delivery in Manitoba, said in an email Friday.

In 2019, there were 143 cases treated in hospital. Most happened between June and November, fitting with the seasonal nature of the disease, which typically spreads more in the summer and fall, the spokesperson said.

No cases from 2019 to present day have required admission to hospital, they said. The numbers also don't include patients who got care outside a hospital setting, like through a primary care provider...

Common childhood illnesses may be making a comeback after a lull during the pandemic, says a Saint John pediatrician.

Doctors in primary care and emergency departments are seeing "a huge influx" of many viruses, said Dr. Sarah Gander.

"Working last night in the hospital, it seems sort of relentless," she said.

One of the illnesses going around is hand, foot and mouth disease.

Health Department spokesperson Adam Bowie acknowledged there have been anecdotal reports of the disease in recent months, but said it's not considered an outbreak.

Case numbers aren't known, he said, because instances of the disease don't have to be reported to Public Health...
