Campbell's 'Nourish' to feed hungry at home, abroad

Canadian innovation is at the forefront of Campbell's new "complete meal" soup developed to address the growing issue of hunger and food security in this country and in disaster zones abroad.

Campbell Canada calls Nourish "a complete meal" containing a full serving of vegetables, grains and meat and alternatives as per Canada's Food Guide. It also delivers fibre and at least 18 grams of protein.

The company launched Nourish this week with an initial donation of 100,000 cans to Food Banks Canada.

Campbell will donate 100 per cent of the net profits from every can sold to fund further hunger-relief initiatives, Donne said. Canadians will also be able to purchase and donate cans of Nourish directly to local food banks via in-store bins.

At least this product is not all carbs, as is often supplied in food banks. I used to volunteer in a food bank and there was a terrible shortage of vegetables, fruits, good whole grains, etc..

Agencies and governments should be pushing industry to target multiple needs in developing their products, Dr. Collins said. They need to design recipes not just for consumption in developing countries, he said, but also for production in needy places where local ingredients can be purchased, thereby stimulating economies, agriculture and creating jobs.

?That?s where the battle is,? Dr. Collins said. ?The idea that companies will just manufacture these products in developed [countries] and dump them on Africa is such a shame.?

Asked if Campbell?s Nourish could be made in other countries, Mr. Donne said the company would be ?100 per cent open? to considering the idea.

?We?re learning as we?re going here and, admittedly, there?s lots of things we can get better at on this,? he said. ?Sometimes it takes a big company to jump into some of the risks ? and show others that it might be done.?

This product could be used in Japan for those without homes, electricity, stores, roads, etc. TV news tonight told of people who haven't eaten for 12 hours.
