Cameroon: 114 suspected cases of Mpox since 2025
French.china.org.cn | Updated on 14-01-2026
Cameroon has recorded 114 suspected cases of Mpox, including 10 confirmed cases, since January 1, 2025, with no reported deaths, announced Manaouda Malachie, Cameroon's Minister of Public Health, on Tuesday.
Five cases of Mpox were confirmed in Cameroon between November 14, 2025 and January 7, 2026, according to a statement from the Cameroonian minister.
Four of the cases were reported in the Littoral region, while one case was notified in the Southwest region, according to the statement.
Health authorities have indicated that the resurgence of cases in the Littoral region, in urban and semi-urban areas, combined with the continuous notification of new suspected cases in other regions, increases the risk of the epidemic spreading nationwide.
Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a zoonotic disease transmitted primarily from animals to humans by rodents, with the possibility of human-to-human transmission. It typically manifests as skin rashes accompanied by fever.

The surge in cases observed in the Littoral and Central regions and the presence of cases in some other regions prompted the Minister of Public Health to activate the monitoring and care system.
Monkeypox, also known as Mpox, has been affecting populations in Cameroon since the end of 2025. Between November 14, 2025, and January 7, 2026, health authorities reported five confirmed cases nationwide, four in the Littoral region and one in the Southwest region. In the Littoral region, the disease affected the health districts of Abo (1 case), Cité des Palmiers (1 case), and Deido (2 cases). Only one health district was affected in the Southwest region: Akwaya, which recorded one case.
Furthermore, according to the Minister of Public Health, since January 1 , 2026, the country has recorded 114 suspected cases, including 10 confirmed cases. No deaths have been recorded. The Central region has four cases in the Ayos health district, the Southwest region one case in the Akwaya health district, the South region one case in the Kribi health district, and the Littoral region one case in the Abo, Deido, and Cité des Palmiers health districts.
Faced with this surge in cases, the Minister of Public Health is organizing the response in the Littoral region as well as in other regions. To contain the disease and break the chain of transmission, the Minister has instructed the implementation of appropriate control measures in the Littoral region. Malachie Manaouda has ordered the establishment of an incident management system, the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance, public awareness campaigns, and the effective management of cases in healthcare facilities. He has placed the other regions under a maximum alert system.
Mpox, a disease transmitted from animals to humans with the possibility of human-to-human transmission, manifests as skin rashes accompanied by fever. The disease has been prevalent on the African continent in recent years, causing numerous cases, including deaths. On August 13, 2024, it was declared a "continental public health emergency" due to its spread across Africa. Given the health risks posed by the surge in cases, vigilance remains crucial for both the general public and healthcare professionals.
