Cholera, a bacterial infection that spreads through contaminated water and food, killed 87 people in Cameroon since January, according to the country?s public health minister, Andre Mama Fouda.

Summary

This Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 1,249,847 in cash, kind, or services to support the Cameroon Red Cross National Society to assist about 87,500 direct beneficiaries in Centre, Littoral, West and South-West regions of Cameroon for 12 months. The operation will be completed by end March, 2012. A Final Report will be made available by 30 June, 2012 (three months after the end of the operation).

CHF 150,000 has been allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support timely initiation of this operation. Un-earmarked funds to replenish DREF are encouraged.

Beginning May, 2010, a cholera outbreak occurred in Cameroon infecting about 10,000 people and killing 650. Thanks to joint efforts by Government, partners and the Red Cross, the epidemic was put under control in Far North region, the focus of the disease, towards the end of 2010.

However, since early 2011, another cholera outbreak is underway. By 29 March, 2,391 cases and 98 deaths had been recorded, in 8 of Cameroons 10 regions. The Centre region (including the capital, Yaound?) is the most affected in terms of number of deaths with 687 cases and 43 deaths registered, and most partners are focussing their efforts there. However, Cameroon Red Cross and IFRC have determined that there is an urgent need to expand the response to the four most affected regions and further scale up as necessary, as people are moving every day from one region to the other, and the Vibrio cholerae bacteria are likely to travel with them.

This Emergency Appeal responds to a request from the Cameroon Red Cross National Society, and focuses on the four most affected regions: Centre, Littoral, West and South-West, supporting the delivery of appropriate and timely assistance and relief in emergency health, water and sanitation, and hygiene promotion.

The North West regio3nal Delegate of Public Health has confirmed the death of two persons, victims of cholera attack.

The appearance of the killer epidemic in the North West Region is a scary development that was least expected at a time when a number of measures are taken to combat the spread of the infection in the Centre Region

FAMILIES in Cameroon are in the grip of another deadly cholera outbreak, reports children?s charity Plan International.


Most new cases of the waterborne disease are in the central region of the country.

Poor health and hygiene conditions are the main cause for the rapid spread, combined with a lack of safe water.

The capital Yaounde has reported the most cases with 1564 infected.

In the worst affected division, Mfoundi, there were 500 new cases last week alone, with 46 deaths.

But reliable data on the number and type of cases is scarce, prompting Plan to work with the government on improving the reporting process.

Last autumn, 200 people in Cameroon were killed by cholera, a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food or water

Aid plea to fight cholera outbreak

A cholera outbreak in west Africa could claim hundreds of lives a day without urgent aid to prevent the spread of the disease, a charity has warned.

More than 3,000 people have been infected and around 150 people are known to have have died in an outbreak of the waterborne bacterial disease in Cameroon since it took hold in the centre and south west of the country in March.

The outbreak is steadily gaining pace, with the worst affected district of Mfoundi reporting 500 new cases and 46 deaths in the last week. The capital of Yaounde has seen more than 1,500 cases.

Baro Famari, country director for charity Plan International, said without government aid the outbreak could spread rapidly and, in a scenario similar to that in Haiti in 2010, claim up to 300 lives a day.

EXPERTS are struggling to contain a mass cholera epidemic in Cameroon, which is killing scores of children, women and elderly people.

Children?s charity Plan International says the number of cases in the West African country rose by more than a fifth in the last week.

5600 people are now suffering from the highly infectious waterborne disease and 179 have died.

?The centre region of the country is the most heavily affected, with almost all health districts reporting cases,? says Barro Famari, Plan International?s Country Director in Cameroon.

YAOUNDE (AlertNet) - An unprecedented cholera outbreak is spreading fast through Cameroon?s capital, after an early start to the rainy season, causing more than 250 deaths in two months alone, according to the government.

Abnormal rainfall has triggered floods in Yaounde, contaminating drinking water from dug wells, especially in slum areas, council authorities say.

?Heavy rains that started very unusually in February this year have caused floods in some quarters like Biyemassi, Mendong, Carriere and Obili, where many cases of the cholera epidemic have been reported,? said Ntsimi Evouna, government delegate to Yaounde city council. He cautioned the population to stay away from the affected neighbourhoods.

The west-central African nation has two main seasons: a dry season from October to April and a rainy season from May to September.

Yaound?, CAMEROON: The death toll and the number of reported cases of cholera continue to rise across Cameroon: nearly 7,718 cases reported in 9 out of 10 regions and 256 deaths attributed to the epidemic. Cameroonians continue to struggle in containing this killer disease.

Plan in Cameroon has been deploying teams of community volunteers ?cholera soldiers? in its seven operational regions: Centre, South West, North West, West, Littoral, North and Far North. The Centre region with more than 2,558 cases reported is hardest hit, although in part through the efforts of Plan, the number of new cases being reported there has slowed to almost none.

Cholera goes Bafut: rumours talk of mishandling of infected corpse

It is just an allegation, official sources have not confirmed what the Ministry of Public Health is current working hard to prevent, the mishandling of cholera infected corpses.

What is however certain is that 88 cases of cholera recently surfaced in Bafut in the North West Region after a patient who died of cholera in the South West Region was transferred to Bafut for burial.

The latest update has left the population in panic more so as six of the 88 infected are dead.

The Chief medical officer of the Bafut Health district, Dr Ajabmoh Henry Njoteh says five more cases have just been declared at Bakong Health Centre.

He has called on competent authorities to make available the necessary resources to fight the spread of the infection in Bafut.

The cholera outbreak in Cameroon is falling under the radar in the international news. With events in Syria and Libya dominating the World News and a more substantial epidemic in Haiti, the fight against cholera in Cameroon is one of those forgotten emergencies. Dualta Roughneen of Plan Ireland has spent the last month working with Plan?s team in Cameroon who are working to stop the outbreak turning into an epidemic.

Bibemi is a rural health district in the North Region of Cameroon. It takes about 19 hours to drive there from the capital, Yaound?, along many dirt roads. Bibemi has been particularly hard hit by this outbreak. With a population of 90,000, there have been over 800 cases of cholera resulting in 62 deaths in the district. Not only is the number of cases per population far higher than other areas, but the fatality rate is extremely high at 7%. Of the total reported cases since April, 10% have been in Bibemi.

ALMOST 8,000 CASES of cholera have been reported in the African country of Cameroon, with one Irish charity calling the epidemic a ?forgotten emergency?.

Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- A cholera outbreak in Cameroon's Far North region killed 59 people from June 1 to Aug. 12, Rebecca Djao, the regional delegate for public health, said.

More than 1,300 new cases of the disease have been found during that period, Djao said in a telephone interview today from Maroua, the capital of the Far North region.

Maroua, Cameroon (CNN) -- Public health officials say nearly 500 people have died of cholera in Cameroon this month, and 13,000 cases have been reported in the country this year.

More than 50 of this month's deaths were in the Far North region, the hardest-hit area so far. Residents in the Logone and Chari divisions of the region told CNN that the majority of people infected with the disease are children under the age of five and women.

Prof. Gervais Ondobo Andze, the director of disease control at the Ministry of Public Health, told journalists Monday that nine of the country's 10 regions are affected by cholera, an intestinal infection caused by ingestion of bacteria-contaminated food or water. It causes watery diarrhea and vomiting, which can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death if not treated promptly. About 80 percent of cases can be cured by rehydrating the patient, according to the World Health Organization.
