Cambodia: 5th death from bird flu since the beginning of the year

PHNOM PENH - A little girl of 5 years died of bird flu in Cambodia, bringing to five the number of deaths from this disease in the country since the beginning of the year.

The child in the province of Prey Veng (southeast), died April 16, said Thursday the Department of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a joint statement.

Tests confirmed she had contracted the H5N1 bird flu.

The girl is the 15th person infected with this virus and the 13th to die from complications from the disease since 2003, the statement said.

Compared to last year, we saw more cases of H5N1 this year and the children seem to be most vulnerable, "said Minister of Health Mam Bun Heng, urging parents to keep children away from sick or dead poultry .

The five cases listed in the country since the beginning of the year have been fatal. Four of the victims were children.

The H5N1 bird flu has killed 320 people worldwide since 2003, the statement said.

Cambodian girl dies from bird flu: WHO

PHNOM PENH : A five-year-old Cambodian girl has become the fifth person to die from bird flu in the country this year, officials said on Thursday.

The child, from southeastern Prey Veng province, died on April 16, the health ministry and the World Health Organisation said in a joint statement. Tests confirmed she had contracted H5N1 avian influenza.

The girl is the 15th person in Cambodia known to have become infected with the H5N1 virus and the 13th to die from complications of the disease since 2003, according to the statement.

"Compared to last year, we have seen more H5N1 cases this year and children appear to be most vulnerable. I urge parents and guardians to keep children away from sick or dead poultry," said Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bun Heng.
All five of Cambodia's bird flu cases since January have been fatal. Four of the victims were children.

The H5N1 strain of avian influenza has killed 320 people worldwide since 2003, the statement said.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Kingdom of Cambodia has announced a confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.

The case was a 5 year old girl from Pea Raing district, Prey Veng Province. She developed symptoms on 11 April, was initially treated by local private practitioners with no effect and was later admitted to Kantha Bopha Children Hospital on 13 April. Despite all intensive care, she died on 16 April, four days after admission.

There have been reports of poultry die off in her village.

The girl is the fifteenth person in Cambodia to become infected with the H5N1 virus and the thirteenth to die from complications of the disease.

All five cases of H5N1 infections in humans in Cambodia this year have been fatal.
Specimens from 53 contacts of the cases were collected and are being tested by the National Institute for Public Health laboratory.
