Bug Levels 100 Students at Point Loma Nazarene

By Gail Powell | Published Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010

One hundred or so students at Point Loma Nazarene University have recently come down with the norovirus &mdash otherwise known as the "cruise ship disease." Several students reported cases of gastrointestinal upset over the first weekend of December.

School officials were notified when reports of the first illnesses broke and the number of ill students quickly increased. Symptoms of the virus included severe vomiting, chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain. School officials denied that the source of the norovirus was related in any way to the Point Loma Nazarene cafeteria services or any kind of food-borne illness.

It can be spread when an infected food worker contaminates a food item during food preparation or serving. It can also be spread directly from person-to-person. During the winter months, illnesses related to norovirus tend to increase and cause outbreaks associated with group gatherings, especially those involving food service such as group holiday events.

If a norovirus outbreak is suspected at your facility, review Article 3 of the California Retail Food Code (CalCode) regarding Employee Health and Hygiene and promptly take the following actions:
  • Immediately exclude and/or restrict any food employee with vomiting and/or diarrhea from working with food, food utensils, and food equipment until they are symptom free for at least 48 hours.
  • Report to the Department of Environmental Health if two or more people from separate households (from your staff or patrons) experience acute gastrointestinal illness within a 24-48 hour period. Prompt reporting of suspect outbreaks can help stop the spread of norovirus and protect the health of those working and eating at your facility.
  • Promptly disinfect food contact surfaces, restrooms, break rooms, common areas and frequently touched surfaces with a disinfectant effective against norovirus.
For additional information about cleaning and disinfection against norovirus, refer to the norovirus guidance document.
Please immediately report suspected outbreaks to the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health (DEH) at 619-338-2356 or to the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) at 619-515-6620. These Departments are staffed by knowledgeable environmental health specialists, epidemiologists, and public health nurses who are trained to help you respond to an outbreak by recommending effective infection control measures.

Norovirus Likely The Cause of Science Camp Outbreak

Marin County health official says stool samples are needed to confirm what caused stomach ailments at Walker Creek Ranch in West Marin.
By Brent Ainsworth and Elizabeth Shemaria
February 6, 2011

The community may know for sure early this week why students and teachers at Walker Creek Science Camp in Marin County got sick late last week.

In the meantime, it is believed the outbreak was caused by norovirus, the same ailment that often sparks nausea and diarrhea in close quarters such as on cruise ships and atnsenior care facilities.
...

More than 250 people were at Walker Creek Ranch, a residential science camp in West Marin, when the stomach illness made about 60 people sick at the camp starting late Tuesday night.

Tests Show Norovirus Likely Spread Among Campers at Walker Creek

The Marin County Health Department will continue to investigate the cause of the sudden outbreak at the science camp last week through lab tests.

By Elizabeth Shemaria | Email the author | February 7, 2011

Marin County Health officials have confirmed norovirus was present at the Walker Creek Ranch when about 60 people got sick at science camp last week.

The health department released a letter today about lab tests of stool samples, which showed some people who got sick at the ranch had norovirus in their systems.

The letter sent to parents at Tassajara Hills Elementary in Danville, San Ramon Elementary in Novato and Redwood Day School in Oakland, said the investigation "indicates that the illness likely spread directly between children, rather than through contaminated food or water."

The letter went on to say "the first person who became sick was likely already infected and incubating the illness when they arrived at science camp last week."

The health department is urging all food establishments to take extreme precautions to insure none of their employees are ill, have been recently ill and are following all precautions with handling food and food preparation areas.

It is the establishment?s responsibility to make customers? health their number one priority.

Nearly 130 sixth-grade students from two Orange Unified elementary schools are ailing after contracting a virus from an unknown source during a field trip to Big Bear Mountain this week.<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->

Officials said initially about three dozen students from Crescent and Olive schools contracted Norovirus, which causes acute gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu, prompting them to abort the trip on Wednesday ? just two days after 230 students arrived at Camp Cedar Crest in Running Springs.<!--googleoff: all-->

Symptoms of the virus include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain.<!--googleoff: all-->

"The virus was very contagious," said Pam Johnson, administrator for the program. "It quickly spread, so we decided to end the field trip and send everyone home."<!--googleoff: all-->

The number of cases grew to 128 over the last three days, officials said.

"The Health Care Agency is working diligently with the affected schools in Orange Unified School District, Olive Elementary and Crescent Elementary, to inform parents of the situation," she said. "It is important that parents keep their children home for 48 hours from the last episode of symptoms. Symptoms appear to be resolving in 12-48 hours from onset."<!--googleoff: all-->

Johnson said this was the first such outbreak in the more than 20 years she has been involved with the program, which works with about 16,700 students annually.<!--googleoff: all-->

Marin County public health officials have quarantined the county's largest nursing home, Country Villa Novato Healthcare Center in Novato, due to an outbreak of norovirus.

Several cases of norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness, also were reported at another Marin County nursing home on Friday.

County Villa's managers have called family and friends of residents and told them not to visit, and residents have been instructed to remain in their rooms. Since the outbreak began on Nov. 6, 80 residents and staff members have become ill. The center at 1565 Hill Road has 181 certified beds and a similar number of employees, although some work part-time, said Darron Treude, Country Villa's administrator.

Linda Ferguson, the county's communicable disease controller, said two residents at Country Villa who became sick were hospitalized. They have since recovered, Ferguson said. She declined to identify the Marin nursing home where the other norovirus outbreak has occurred.

More than 50 people at a South San Jose retirement community are recovering from a norovirus outbreak, prompting health officials to remind people in closed quarters to be extra careful to avoid contracting the nasty stomach flu.

The senior citizens living at The Atrium, across from Oakridge Mall, fell ill starting two weeks ago, and six of them ended up in the hospital but have since returned home, officials at the facility said.

Out of an "abundance of caution," the facility temporarily ended common activities including meals in the dining room, and also sanitized common areas, asked visitors not to come and installed hand sanitizer dispensers, said Matt Fontana, a spokesman for Brookdale Senior Living, which runs The Atrium.

Sacramento elder care facilities combating norovirus outbreaks

Excerpt:
"This is fairly common this time of year," said Dr. Laurie Werner, interim public health officer for Sacramento County. "It is not unusual to have this amount of norovirus activity in facilities."

She said the norovirus is now present in both skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. As of Tuesday, there have been six confirmed cases in three different facilities.

"However, we have a total of seven facilities that have been affected by the symptoms of norovirus," said Werner. "And a total 174 people, including residents and staff, have been affected by a viral illness that includes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Norovirus causes 90 percent of the illnesses like that."
