Newsom's November 1 Instagram post further confused members of the public and continued to drive speculation as the governor remained out of the public eye last week. "Well it said, 'family obligations,'" Michaelson clarified.

"I don't know if it's an obligation to spend time with your kids, but my wife, who has spending a great deal of time — a disproportionate amount of time — with the challenge of having a spouse battling recalls, crisis to crisis, it was spending time with her and the kids and we put out a statement accordingly," the governor said.

Michaelson then asked Newsom if the bizarre episode changed the way he thinks about communicating in the era of social media, likely a reference to the fact that amid Newsom's absence and silence, some on social media speculated his lack of visibility was a result of the COVID-19 booster he received at his last public appearance before going dark.
