California is headed toward its worst whooping cough epidemic in 50 years.
The state declares an epidemic, with 253 cases reported in Fresno County alone.
The Department of Public Health says infants as young as six weeks old are at risk.
One death was reported in Fresno County, with another four across the state.
All were infants.
Officials say symptoms of whooping cough are like a cold.
"Cover your cough, cough in your sleeve, stay home when you're sick, wash your hands. It's the same measures we talked about with H1N1 and influenza, it's the same here. We do these measures, we can disrupt transmission in our community, and it worked well with H1N1," says division manager, David Luchini.
The Department of Public Health deals with about ten cases every day.
A vaccine is available to adults and teenagers.
