What public health thought was a tenth measles case in Shasta County in 2026 turned out to be a misdiagnosis, the agency said.

A measles confirmation test administered to a patient — originally identified as having measles on March 23 — came back negative for the disease, Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.

"As a result, the Shasta County measles outbreak, first identified Jan. 30, ended on March 30," the agency reported, and "the county’s final measles case count so far this year is nine."

The nine people with confirmed measles cases in 2026 fully recovered from the highly contagious illness, public health said in the announcement...

Confirmed Measles Case in Orange County
(Santa Ana, CA) – The OC Health Care Agency (HCA) received confirmation of a measles case in an infant who had history of international travel. The HCA is notifying individuals who were exposed to the person in health care and other settings.

“Measles is highly contagious. Anyone planning domestic or international travel—or hosting visitors—should be fully vaccinated at least two weeks beforehand. Infants less than a year old who are traveling internationally should receive one dose of MMR vaccine before departure. Adults and others who are not immune remain at risk, especially as outbreaks continue across the country and worldwide,” said Dr. Anissa Davis, Deputy County Health Officer. “Vaccination is the best protection.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have already been 1,792 confirmed measles cases in the United States in 2026. By comparison, 2025 saw 2,267 cases, the highest annual total in more than 30 years. This is the third case of measles in Orange County in 2026...

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed its fifth measles case of the year. The person flew into LAX on Thursday, May 14.

Why now: The resident was traveling internationally and arrived at Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B) at LAX on May 14 via Alaska Airlines Flight 1354, departing from Guatemala City. Anyone in the terminal between 6 and 8 a.m. that morning may have been exposed.

What's next: Public health officials say passengers seated near the infected traveler will be notified by their respective local health departments. They are working to find additional exposure sites that the traveler visited in L.A. County.

What you should do: If you were at LAX during that time, officials say you should check your vaccination status...

County public health officials have confirmed two unrelated cases of measles.

Both people who got sick travel to San Diego for work. One of the cases involved public exposure.

Health officials say the infectious person, who did not have proof of measles vaccination, spent time at these locations:
  • Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina located at 333 W Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101  on May 17, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • Baskin Robbins located at 791 Palm Ave. Suite 103, Imperial Beach, CA 91932 on May 20 between 5 and 7:30 p.m.
County Immunization staff are working with the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina to identify and follow up with potentially exposed employees, and notifications are also being sent to guests who were on site during those times.
“Measles spreads very easily, even through the air, so anyone who was at these locations during the listed times should watch for symptoms and contact their health care provider if they start to feel sick,” said Sayone Thihalolipavan, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.

People with symptoms are asked to call their healthcare provider before arriving so that infection control measures can be put in place.

Measles symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure. Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash one to four days later. People are contagious four days before and four days after the rash appears.

The best prevention against measles is vaccination. With outbreaks reported in several states, officials urge everyone to ensure they are fully vaccinated, especially travelers. Infants between 6 and 12 months of age who travel should get one dose. Anyone over 12 months who travels should receive two doses at least four weeks apart.

Complications are more common in children younger than 5 years old and adults 20 years and older. Severe cases can be life-threatening. There is no medicine that cures measles, but people who develop complications may need medical care tailored to those issues.

The second case of measles did not result in public exposure.

In March, the County reported one measles case in an out-of-state visitor. No additional local cases have been reported this year. Statewide, the California Department of Public Health has confirmed 49 cases so far this year.

Traveler with measles passed through LAX: Officials urge caution amid World Cup crowds
14 hours, 15 minutes ago by Rong-Gong Lin II Los Angeles Times (TNS)

LOS ANGELES -- A person infected with measles flew on a transpacific flight and passed through Los Angeles International Airport last week, potentially exposing other passengers to the highly contagious disease.

This latest case comes as travelers surge into Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area for the FIFA World Cup, and as measles is on the upswing -- posing a particular risk to the unvaccinated, including infants who are too young to be inoculated and for whom the disease can be especially dangerous.

"I think they seem to be popping up more and more often," said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UC San Francisco infectious diseases expert, "and that's because it really reflects how much measles there is -- not just in the U.S. or even Mexico and Canada, but around the world."

This is the fourth measles case confirmed in a passenger passing through LAX while possibly contagious this year, and the sixth case overall reported by L.A. County health officials. Just a few days earlier, health officials in the Bay Area warned that a measles-infected passenger had also traveled through San Francisco International Airport and potentially exposed others to the disease while visiting stores in San José...

For Immediate Release:

June 17, 2026 Public Health Confirms Measles Case in LA County

Public Advised to Take Preventive Steps and Ensure Measles Protection

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating a confirmed case of measles in a traveler who was infectious while traveling through Los Angeles County. People may have been exposed to measles at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), at least one other location, and additional healthcare settings in Los Angeles County. Potential exposure dates and times are listed below. This is the sixth case of measles reported by Public Health in 2026.

This traveler arrived on Cathay Pacific Airlines flight CX 884 at the Tom Bradley International Airport (TBIT) Terminal B, on June 11, 2026.

Individuals who were at TBIT Terminal B on June 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. may have been exposed to measles.

In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), passengers seated near the infected traveler will be notified by their respective local health departments. The CDC and local public health departments routinely work together to investigate communicable disease exposures on international flights to the United States.

Additionally, individuals who were at the following location on the specific date and times may be at risk of developing measles due to exposure to this case:

· June 11, 2026 – Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel, 5711 W Century Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90045, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

People who were at the above locations during the dates and times listed above may be at risk of developing measles from 7 to 21 days after being exposed. These individuals should confirm their protection against measles. Those who have had measles in the past or received the recommended measles vaccine are likely protected but should still monitor for symptoms. People who are unimmunized or have unknown measles immunization status are at higher risk and should monitor for symptoms closely. Anyone who remains symptom-free for more than 21 days after being exposed is no longer considered at risk. The last day to monitor for symptoms is July 2, 2026.

Affected healthcare facilities are directly notifying patients and staff who may have been exposed.

Public Health is working to identify any other potential exposure sites in Los Angeles County and any others who may have been exposed and will assess their risk for developing a measles infection.

As measles outbreaks continue to occur both in the United States and internationally, Public Health urges everyone in LA County to ensure they are fully protected from measles before traveling and take recommended precautions.

The most effective way to protect yourself and your family is with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Children 12 months and older are considered fully protected against measles after receiving two doses of the MMR vaccine. Infants who are older than 6 months and are traveling internationally or to domestic areas with ongoing measles outbreaks can get an early dose.

“As measles cases increase, it is important that residents take steps to make sure they are fully protected. The MMR vaccine is the safest and most reliable way to prevent measles and protect yourself, your family, and your community,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. “Measles spreads easily and can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. With summer travel underway and Los Angeles County welcoming large gatherings and international visitors during World Cup events, the risk of exposure to infectious diseases may increase. We urge everyone to confirm their immunity and get the MMR vaccine if needed, especially before traveling and attending crowded events. Taking this simple step helps safeguard your health and strengthens protection for our entire community.”

Public Health encourages everyone to:

· Check your immunization status before traveling. Review your immunization and medical records to determine if everyone in your family is protected against measles. People are considered protected if they have had measles in the past or have received the recommended MMR vaccine. This is especially important for anyone 6 months of age and older who will be traveling internationally or domestically in areas experiencing measles outbreaks. Infants aged 6 to 11 months with planned travel to these locations should receive one early dose of MMR at least 2 weeks before travel. This does not replace the routine doses given at 12-15 months and 4-6 years. Anyone who is not protected should talk with a health care provider about receiving the MMR immunization.

· Notify a healthcare provider if you are at higher risk. Contact and notify your health care provider as soon as possible about a potential exposure for guidance and next steps, especially if you are pregnant, the person exposed is an infant under aged 12 months, you have a weakened immune system and/or are unimmunized.

· Watch for symptoms and take immediate action. If symptoms develop, such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or a rash, stay at home and avoid school, work, and any gatherings. Call a healthcare provider immediately. Do not go into a health care facility without calling them first. Let them know you may have been exposed to measles and describe your symptoms. Public Health can assist health care providers in appropriately diagnosing and managing your care.

About Measles

Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes. The virus can stay in the air and on surfaces for many hours, even after the infected person has left. The infected person can spread the disease up to four days before a measles rash appears and up to four days after the rash appears. If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses, or mouths, they can become infected.

Common symptoms include:

· Fever (higher than 101° F)

· Cough

· Runny nose

· Red and watery eyes

· Rash 3-5 days after other signs of illness. The “measles rash” typically starts at the face and then spreads down to the rest of the body.

Measles can be prevented with a measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR or MMRV). The MMR vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps and rubella. The MMRV vaccine protects against four diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox). They are administered in two doses and are highly effective: two doses are 97% effective against measles and one dose is 93% effective. The spread of measles can be prevented if 2-dose coverage of vaccine remains at 95% or above in the community. For more information on measles, visit: ph.lacounty.gov/measles.

Most health insurances cover the cost of the MMR and MMRV vaccine. Insured persons should check with their doctor or local pharmacy to see what vaccines are offered. Uninsured or underinsured children and adults can access free or low-cost vaccines at clinics enrolled in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Vaccines for Adults (VFA) program. For a list of clinics that offer free or low-cost immunizations for persons who are uninsured or underinsured, call 2-1-1 or visit: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/ip/clinics.htm.

In the United States, as of June 12, a total of 2,073 measles cases have been reported this year. Most of these cases are associated with outbreaks that started in 2025 and 2026. The majority of cases are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status. Six percent of these cases required hospitalization for management of measles complications or isolation. Travelers should also exercise caution and confirm immunity before visiting Mexico, as there is a ongoing measles outbreak with over 18,362 cases reported in 2026. The last case of measles reported by Los Angeles County was reported on May 16, 2026.

Orange County Measles case: toddler diagnosed after international travel
ByArt Pedroza
Aug 4, 2026

The OC Health Care Agency (HCA) has confirmed a new case of measles in an Orange County toddler who recently returned from international travel. Local health officials are actively tracking and notifying individuals who may have been exposed to the child in healthcare and community settings.

This local case arrives amid an alarming, historic spike in infections, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting 2,371 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. so far this year. This represents the highest annual case count recorded since measles was declared eradicated in the United States back in 2000.
Measles Cases Rapidly Climbing in California

The resurgence is hitting the West Coast particularly hard. In the first half of this year, California measles cases have doubled compared to last year’s totals, reaching 52 confirmed cases. The vast majority of these infections—49 out of the 52 patients—occurred in individuals who were entirely unvaccinated.

Public health agencies are currently tracking 34 localized outbreaks across the state. This sudden surge is primarily driven by a combination of international travel importations and widening gaps in community immunity...
