1 pediatric (under 5 years), 1 adult (51-64 years) death reported; total 11

CDPH received six reports of laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks in week 10; all at congregate living facilities. Four were associated with influenza A (H3) and occurred in the southern and San Francisco bay area regions and two were associated with influenza A (2009 H1N1) and occurred in the San Francisco bay area region.

Outpatient influenza-like illness (ILI) was down 0.5% in week 10 (3.1%) compared to week 9 (3.6%).

Of 1865 specimens tested during week 10, 509 (27.3%) were positive for influenza; of these 73 (14.3%) were influenza B and 436 (85.7%) were influenza A. 102 (23.4%) were subtyped as seasonal A (H3), 46 (10.6%) were subtyped as 2009 A (H1), and 288 (66.1%) were not subtyped.

No resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors has been identified in 60 influenza isolates tested during the 2011-2012 influenza season.

Eighty-two specimens from California residents have been strain-typed this season; all but eight influenza B strains match the 2011-12 influenza vaccine.

CDPH received six reports of laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks in week 12; one was in a school and five were in congregate living facilities. Of the six outbreaks, 2 were associated with influenza A (H3) and 4 were associated with influenza A (subtyping not done).

Outpatient influenza-like illness (ILI) was up 0.3% in week 12 (3.1%) compared to week 11 (2.8%).

Of 2296 specimens tested during week 12, 28.1% were positive for influenza; of these 17.3% were influenza B and 82.7% were influenza A, 5.4% were subtyped as 2009 A (H1), 20.8% were subtyped as seasonal A (H3), and 73.8% were not subtyped.

No resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors has been identified in 78 influenza isolates tested during the 2011-2012 influenza season.

CDPH received four reports of laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks in week 13; two were in schools and two were in congregate living facilities. Of the four outbreaks, one was associated with influenza A (H3), one was associated with influenza A where subtyping was not performed and two were associated with influenza where the type was not provided.

ILI: 3.1%
32.4% positive for influenza: 24.0% were influenza B and 76.0% were influenza A.

6.2% positive for influenza; no suspected or confirmed influenza A (H3N2)v [variant influenza A (H3N2), formerly called swine-origin triple reassortant A (H3N2)] has been detected in California.

CDPH received one report of a laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreak in week 19 in a congregate living facility that was associated with influenza A (no subtyping performed).

July 2012: FINAL REPORT (according to CDPH website) for 2011-12 flu season

196 reports of influenza-associated severe illness or death were reported among <65 year olds. Of these, 152 were non-fatal (77.6%) and 44 fatal (22.4%).
