Typhus case in Manhattan Beach prompts warning from county health officials

Reports that a case of typhus turned up this fall in Manhattan Beach prompted resident calls to county health officials who had this advice: take precautions, but don?t panic.
The flea-borne, flu-like illness is treatable with antibiotics but cases have been rising, according to the county?s Acute Communicable Disease Control website.
There were 38 cases of typhus fever reported in 2011, up from the previous number of 31 cases in 2010. Both were records in Los Angeles County.
From 2000-11, there were 188 cases reported.
