A mysterious illness that killed an 18-year-old Healdsburg college student who returned home for summer has left family members and friends mourning her sudden death and searching for answers.
Claire Daniels, a 2017 Cardinal Newman grad who was passionate about helping girls gain confidence, died on June 9, a little over a week after she started experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Doctors have not determined the cause of her illness, mother Cheryl Gray said. The Sonoma County Department of Health ruled out the Russian River as a source of exposure after people close to Daniels expressed concerns.

She returned to her parents? home in Healdsburg a few weeks before she died, and she had just started a summer retail job at Punch Clothing in Healdsburg, where Daniels enjoyed greeting customers at the store ? many of whom she knew from growing up in town...
