Chicken Pox Outbreak at Hill Creek Elementary

Health officials are urging parents to vaccinate children after five students came down with the virus.

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) has announced a chickenpox (varicella) outbreak at Hill Creek Elementary School.

Five students have been diagnosed, one ten-year-old and four 8-year-olds in different classes. One child was immunized, another was unimmunized, and three others had taken the recommended doses of the varicella vaccine.

Public health officials are investigating 15 probable cases of chickenpox at Trinidad Elementary School, and school staff are working with the Department of Health and Human Services to prevent further spread of the illness, officials said.

The chickenpox vaccine, which normally costs $90, is being made available free of charge by public health for school-age children who need the vaccine. This vaccine is supplied by the California Department of Public Health. The public health clinic is located at 529 I St. in Eureka...
