Residents of Kyeitembe ward in Bushenyi municipality have expressed
worry about a strange disease that has so far killed 4 cows in the
area. Blood oozes out of the carcasses.
The residents criticised the veterinary officers for failing to find
out the cause of the disease.
When contacted, the district veterinary officer, Dr. D.K. Rusoke, was
adamant to give a comment, saying the death of cattle is as normal as
that of human beings. "Go to the affected farmers and ask them to
tell you what is killing their livestock", he said.
The residents feared that the disease could spread to human beings,
saying some farmers sell the meat from the affected animals.
Meanwhile, stray dogs have invaded the same area, killing over 40 goats.

[Four cows are reported to have died and more than 40 goats were
killed by stray dogs. Most likely these 2 events are not causally
related. No description has been given regarding clinical and
possibly postmortem signs, length of illness and whether other
animals are also affected. Additional information on the clinical and
epidemiological description of the affected animals from the
knowledgeable sources in the Municipality will be appreciated.
A cause for concern here is the mention that blood was oozing out of
the carcasses, which is a classic hallmark of anthrax. It is also
true, as the regional veterinary officer suggests, that these deaths
are well within a pattern of normal, expected mortality. It is for
this reason that ProMED-mail would like more definitive information
