Burundi: Mysterious illness kills two in Makamba: growing concern among the population
SOS Media Burundi
Two deaths from a still-unidentified disease have been recorded in the commune of Makamba, recently incorporated into the new Burunga province in southern Burundi. While health authorities investigate to determine the origin of the disease, concern is spreading to the hills bordering Tanzania.
The first victims were reported in the towns of Murambi, Nyakazi, and Bukeye, located along the border. Residents fear contamination from the neighboring country.
"We're scared. We're told it's coming from Tanzania, but we don't know exactly what it is," confided a concerned Bukeye resident.
Severe symptoms and a climate of panic
Those affected exhibited alarming symptoms: sudden fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, intense fatigue, and difficulty breathing. These unusual symptoms quickly caused panic among the local population.
"The population is under tension because we do not know the true nature of this disease," reports an administrative source.
Health investigation in progress
Alerted, the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS dispatched a team of doctors specializing in infectious diseases to the field on Friday, July 4. Their mission: to collect biological samples to analyze the exact causes of the infection.
"We will determine if it is a virus, a bacteria, a parasite or an environmental source of contamination," said a local health official.
Strict health guidelines
Pending the results, health authorities have put in place preventive measures:
Avoid greetings with physical contact;
Wash your hands regularly with clean water and soap;
Limit contact with sick people;
Immediately report any suspected cases to health facilities.
"We call for discipline and solidarity. Caution is essential to slow the spread," stressed an official from the Makamba health district.
Increased surveillance at the border
Strict control measures have also been implemented at border posts with Tanzania. Authorities urge the population to avoid rumors and rely only on information relayed through official channels.
The Ministry of Public Health has committed to publishing the results of the analyses as soon as possible in order to shed light on this worrying disease.
