Two Burlington County residents have been hospitalized with swine flu during a recent rapid spread of the disease throughout the county, county health officials said Monday.

Details about the two hospitalized patients were not immediately available. Officials said the other cases were believed to be mild.

Burlington County Health Department spokeswoman Loretta O?Donnell said swine, also known as H1N1, is now considered widespread throughout the county with a total of 10 confirmed clusters uncovered in the last week.

The largest cluster is believed to be at centered at military installations McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix and Lakehurst Naval Engineering Station in Ocean County. All three bases are merged as a tri-service joint military installation. O?Donnell said the bases cluster has spread into New Hanover and accounts for about half of Burlington County?s 36 confirmed cases of the disease.

A statement posted on the Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst Web site said a total of 12 swine flu cases have been confirmed, including six active-duty service members, five family members of servicemen and women and one civilian worker. A base breakdown of those cases was not available.

O?Donnell said the other cluster towns include Evesham, Bordentown City and Bordentown Township, Moorestown, Mount Laurel and Medford Lakes.

O?Donnell said most of those swine flu cases have involved schools; however, no school have closed in the county due to swine flu since the Hainesport Township School was closed for two days in May after two students became ill with flu. Tests later revealed the students? illness was not swine flu. A total of four New Jersey residents who have contracted swine flu have died, according to the state Department of Health.

As pf Friday, there were a total of 465 cases of swine flu confirmed statewide in 19 counties and 248 probable cases awaiting test results.

O?Donnell said the county?s 36 confirmed swine flu patients has ranged from 2 to 79 years old with the average age being 20 years old.

Since the outbreak of swine flu began in New Jersey in April, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state Department of Health has tested patients who have either been hospitalized or whom were believed to be part of a suspected cluster. Due to the widespread of the disease in the county and state, O?Donnell said testing will no longer be performed on suspected cluster cases but would continue for patients who become hospitalized with flu-like symptoms.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and help prevent the further spread of the disease by regularly washing their hands, covering coughs and sneezes and remaining home from work, school or other activities if feeling ill.
