State of São Paulo confirms first case of bird flu in private farm
A case of bird flu has been confirmed in Greater São Paulo. There is no risk to the population, and the consumption of poultry and eggs is safe, says the government.

The state of São Paulo has confirmed the first case of avian influenza on a private farm near Parelheiros, in Greater São Paulo . The case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was confirmed last Friday (July 11), according to the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply ( SAA ). The department states that all sanitary measures have been taken by the competent authorities, that there is no risk to the population, and that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs remains safe.

The positive focus, confirmed by the Federal Laboratory of Agricultural Defense (LFDA), involved two chickens that lived on a private property near Parelheiros, in the metropolitan region.
On Saturday (12/7), Agricultural Defense teams were on site and carried out depopulation by means of sanitary sacrifice on 10 remaining birds that lived with the positive birds.
“The action also included the appropriate disposal of birds and disinfection of the site ,” explains Paulo Blandino, veterinarian and manager of the State Poultry Health Program (Pesa).
There are no commercial poultry establishments in the vicinity of the property .
Agricultural Defense began active surveillance actions on Monday (14/7) in order to detect possible clinical signs on neighboring properties, within a radius of 10 kilometers.
Even though it was detected in a subsistence farm, the outbreak does not change the health status of São Paulo and Brazil before the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO).
The state of São Paulo has not yet recorded any cases of the disease in humans.
Also last Friday, in Sorocaba, in the interior of the state, a positive case of avian influenza was confirmed in a turkey located inside a condominium where approximately 200 birds live. The Agricultural Defense Agency (APP) was on site and culled the birds that had come into contact with the infected bird. On Monday, teams returned to the site to continue surveillance work.
As part of a health education initiative, the Municipal Health Department has already issued a communication to residents regarding the necessary guidelines to avoid human contact with suspected birds. The Agricultural Defense Department has also issued guidance to residents to be alert for clinical signs in birds, such as: head and body tremors, difficulty breathing, runny nose and/or sneezing, lack of response to attempts to catch them, drooping wings, twisting of the head and neck, incoordination, loss of balance, and circling.

The State Department of Health ( SES ) reports that it is monitoring, together with the Departments of Agriculture and Supply ( SAA ), and Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of SP ( Semil ), the bird flu scenario in the state of São Paulo.
