Belo Horizonte - An inmate at the Center for Relocation of Prisons (Ceresp) Ipatinga, in the Steel Valley miner, died on Friday of an "acute" undetermined. The pathology caused an outbreak in the unit which has caused the death of another arrested on Nov. 8 and led to the hospitalization of eight other inmates and a man and woman who work as prison guards in the prison.

According to the Ministry of Health (SES), the two prisoners who died shared a cell and had the same symptoms: fever, vomiting, low blood pressure and exhaustion. Still according to the SES, the deaths occurred 24 hours after the onset of symptoms. The other ten patients remain hospitalized and had collected material to be analyzed by Funda??o Ezequiel Dias (FUNED) to try to discover the cause of the disease.

Because of the outbreak, were suspended prison visits, which was declared a quarantine, and isolation of people with symptoms in hospitals. The SES reported that patients are being treated with preventive antibiotics for meningitis and given Tamiflu, used to treat swine flu.

The Health Secretariat of Minas Gerais reported late on Friday [11/maio/2012] the occurrence of two deaths in a prison in Ipatinga by "outbreak of acute illness of undetermined cause."

The victim began showing symptoms on Wednesday (9) [maio/2012]. The note does not report the number of prisoners in Ceresp Ipatinga. It only says that the outbreak is confined to a cell.

The visits to inmates are suspended until the disease is identified. Samples are being sent for tests and the prisoners are receiving medication for meningitis with antibiotics and drugs for acute respiratory infection.

The department also determined "respiratory isolation area of the prison for all symptomatic cases in hospitals in the region." In prison there will be quarantined.

Family of inmate who died will sue against the state

The family of Dandara Maiara de Arruda will file a lawsuit for damages against the state. Her sister believes that the conditions of Ceresp Ipatinga favored the onset of the disease that killed Dandara.

The CASE

RESULT
