Brazil develops bioinsecticide against dengue fever mosquito

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 3 (Xinhua) -- A Brazilian company has developed a new bioinsecticide against mosquitoes spreading dengue fever, the Ministry of Science and Technology said Thursday.
Agrobio, a private company hosting a business incubator at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, developed a new biological insecticide that showed in lab tests to be effective against the Aedes Aegypti, the mosquito transmitting dengue and yellow fever viruses, the ministry said on its website.
This bioinsecticide was developed from Bacillus thuringiensis, a species of bacteria isolated from the Aedes Aegypti mosquito's larvae. The bacteria could be induced to produce a toxin to stop the larva developing into pupa, a stage of the insect's life cycle before the emergence of an adult mosquito.
According to the researchers developing this bioinsecticide, the most important aspect of their study is the bacteria used in the product were extracted from the mosquitoes in Rio, taking into consideration the local environment.
The researchers hope to get a special license to use the bioinsecticide experimentally. It is expected to take a further six months to one year for the company to get a license from the Agriculture Ministry for common use.
Some 57,010 people have been infected in a Dengue fever epidemic in the state of Rio, with 67 fatalities recorded so far, in the biggest outbreak since 2001.
