While January to early November in 2010, severe cases of the disease reached 17,027 in the same period of 2012, the number dropped to 3774. The downward trend was already noticed in 2011 when 10,507 cases were reported serious. The epidemiological data are disclosed in the balance on Tuesday (27) by Health Minister Alexandre Padilha.

The Health Minister Alexandre Padilha, attributed the downward trend to several factors such as the organization of public and greater awareness of the population to adopt preventive habits. "The data shows that we are on the right track. Managed a scenario of reducing cases and deaths with a coping strategy for dengue: not just go after the mosquito, but also an improvement in basic assistance, professional training, improvement of actions and computerization of surveillance data, "he said.

Of this total, R $ 143.6 million will be allocated to local health departments and R $ 29.7 million to the state departments of sa?de.Todos the 5,565 Brazilian municipalities receive additional resources. In the past two years, there was 77% reduction in severe cases of the disease and 57% in deaths

To intensify the measures of surveillance, prevention and control of dengue fever, the Ministry of Health is transferring U.S. $ 173.2 million to all municipalities. Of this total, R $ 143.6 million will be allocated to local health departments and R $ 29.7 million to state health departments. Resources are for qualification of actions to combat the mosquito Aedes aegypti disease, which includes improved contingency plans. Last summer the Ministry transferred U.S. $ 92 million for 1180 municipalities.

More than 190 million people will benefit from the measures of prevention and control of dengue. The allowance represents an additional 20% of the annual value of the Fixed Floor Surveillance and Health Promotion and will be transferred in a lump sum.

In contrast, municipalities need to fulfill some goals, like providing adequate quantitative control agents endemics; ensure coverage of home visits by staff; adopt mechanisms to improve the fieldwork; perform LIRAa (Rapid Assessment of Infestation by Aedes aegypti ) with widely disseminated in the media sites; notifying severe cases suspected dengue, among other actions.

CASES OF ILLNESS - Brazil registered a 77% reduction in severe cases of dengue in the comparative period between January to December 2010 and from January to December 2012. Last year, until December 22, 3965 severe cases were recorded nationwide, compared with 17,475 in the same period of 2010.

The state with the highest reduction in severe cases, this two-year period, was Roraima, down 99%, followed by Paul (97%), Rond?nia (96%), Acre and Minas Gerais (95%) and Mato Grosso do Sul and Amazonas (94%). In absolute numbers, the state of S?o Paulo was what accounted for the greatest reduction in severe cases - 82 cases from January to December 2012, against 2,905 in the same period of 2010. The reduction was followed by the state of Rio de Janeiro, with 885 serious cases in 2012 against 2563 in 2010.

DEATHS - Following the same trend, the number of deaths due to dengue in Brazil also fell, from 57% in comparison with 2010. From January until 22 December 2012 were confirmed 283 deaths, while in the same period in 2010 were 656.

If the comparison is made with 2011, when there were 484 deaths, the percentage drop is 42%. Highlights also include the states of Amap?, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal District that showed no death.

RAIN - The increased rainfall and continuous heat in the summer, in different states, favor the proliferation of Aedes aegypti. "Prevention must be maintained, even with the reduction in severe cases of dengue," said Health Minister Alexandre Padilha. He recalls that preventive actions can not be stopped with the change of managers. "I appeal to new mayors, who started the office in January to continue the work already done by predecessors. The combination of preventive work in each residence, with the actions of the government, is able to reduce the presence of the mosquito Aedes aegypti in the environment and thus prevent epidemics, "says the minister .

The Secretary of Health Surveillance, Ministry of Health, Jarbas Barbosa, remember that in the period from December to May, the population must redouble their homes with care by checking the appropriate water storage, packaging waste and disposal of all unused containers that hold water and become mosquito breeding sites. Furthermore, it is important to charge the same care with public environment such as regular garbage pickup routes, cleaning vacant lots, parks, cemeteries and tire repair.

At the first symptoms of dengue (fever, headache, joint pains and in the eye), the recommendation is that the person seek the nearest health facility. It is essential not to take medicine on their own - because it can mask symptoms and make diagnosis - should still be alert to signs of deterioration, such as vomiting and abdominal pain. "The only measure that one should adopt is to drink plenty of liquids, such as water, juices or teas, until answered by a health professional. Also, take a drug inappropriate, such as aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), can contribute to aggravate the situation of the patient, increasing the chance of death, "warns the secretary.
