Brazil is experiencing one the worst droughts ever due to a multitude of reasons- Inadequate water management, increased urbanization, deforestation and low rainfall levels during ?rainy season?.


Malay Mail Online reports, Sao Paulo, the most populous city in South America, is the city worst hit by the drought. Local governments are partially to blame as officials have let pipes go without upgrades for too long. According to a recent government report, 37 per cent of the city?s tap water is lost due to leaky pipes. Rising population density and increased water consumption also placed extra pressure on already inadequate infrastructure.

An additional issue has been linked to the Brazilian drought?a dengue fever surge, according to the Brazilian Health Ministry...

In 2015, 460,502 cases were reported notified of dengue in the country until the week
epidemiological (SE) 12 (04/01/15 28/03/15 to) (Figure 1).
The Southeast region had the largest number
of reported cases (304 251 cases; 66.1%) in the total of the country, followed by regions
Midwest (59 855 cases; 13%), Northeast (51 221 cases; 11.1%), North (19,402 cases; 4.2%)
and South (25,773 cases; 5.6%) (Table 1).

Analysis of the incidence (number of cases / 100,000 inhab.) by region shows
increase in 2015 in all regions the country, with the Midwest and the Southeast
presenting the highest incidence: 393.3 cases / 100,000 inhabitants. and 357.5 cases / 100,000 inhabitants.,

Over 222,000 cases of haemorrhagic Dengue fever have been confirmed in 645 cities of the southern State of Sao Paulo since the start of 2015, marking a historic record based on data released by the Epidemiological monitoring center (CVE).

Just in the first three weeks of April, 32,472 suspected cases were reported, 10,902 of which confirmed. The outbreak has already left 125 dead in the State, nearing the 140 deaths in Sao Paulo in all of 2012, which had at the time marked a record number of deaths.

It is highly probable that the current number will increase, since other 90 deaths are suspected to have been caused by the Dengue fever, reports the Folha newspaper...
