Boy dies after vaccination

CHENNAI: A two-year-old boy died a couple of hours after he was administered polio drops in Padappai in Kancheepuram district on Sunday.

Official sources said the boy, Joshuan, was the son of Arul and Dhanalakshmi and a resident of Periyar Nagar, Padappai.

On Sunday morning, Dhanalakshmi administered polio drops at the Children's Centre near their home.

Soon after, Joshuan developed high temperature and fits and was taken to a private hospital in Padappai, from where he was referred to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet, where the boy was pronounced dead on arrival.

CHENNAI: This year's Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation programme began on Sunday with the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, administering the first dose to a child at his residence in Gopalapuram.

The State Government proposes to administer the oral polio vaccine to 70 lakh children below the age of five in the State.

The drive is part of a comprehensive multi-state polio vaccination campaign;

Throughout Karnataka, 31,010 booths have been opened to administer polio drops to children aged below five, with 48,995 teams working, including 934 mobile units. Around 73 lakh 7.3 million children are to be immunised in the programme.

The mop-up programme to cover children who have missed out on Sunday will be taken up by the health authorities in the next three days between Monday and Wednesday. The special house-to-house drive in the next three days is aimed at reaching the overall target of 6.6 lakh children in Hyderabad and 7 lakh children at Ranga Reddy district. The door-to-door visits will be taken up by local health care workers and other trained medical personnel.

Parents allege polio drops killed their baby

A one-and-half-year-old girl, Sharanya, died on Tuesday allegedly after she was administered polio drops as part of the Pulse Polio drive at Chevuripalem village in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

The girl's parents alleged that she died after the drop was given, but the district medical and health authorities refuted it.

?According to the information gathered by us, the baby was already suffering from fever and diarrhoea. She was taken to a registered medical practitioner for treatment, but when her condition turned critical, they visited a paediatrician. In the afternoon, the mother found the baby drowsy after being given a syrup. The baby died on the way to hospital,? said D. Shalini Devi, Krishna District Medical and Health Officer.
