Possible plague outbreak in Boulder

BOULDER COUNTY ? The public health department is warning about a possible outbreak of plague in prairie dogs in an area of Boulder.
Boulder County Public Health says signs were posted on Friday morning on the Valmont Butte site warning about the possibility of plague.
Boulder County Public Health plans to collect samples over the weekend to test for the plague.
The warning came out because the prairie dog population in the area had gone down significantly. The prairie dog population was going to be relocated while remediation work was done on the area, but when crews went to find the prairie dogs, there were 75 percent less than last year.
Anyone who has access to the site is urged to stay away. Plague can be spread to humans through fleas or direct contact with infected animals.
