The diarrhoea outbreak has claimed the lives of 14 children in the country, a specialist in the Ministry of Health has said.

Dr Nesredin Jami Oumer told Mmegi yesterday that by August 14, they had recorded 14 deaths and 914 infections as the outbreak spread countrywide.

Four deaths were reported in the Bobirwa, three in Mahalapye, two in Boteti, two each from Palapye and Gaborone and one from Francistown. These deaths are in addition to the two reported during the first week of August after 530 diarrhoea cases were reported. Oumer said Kgatleng district is the most affected with 105 cases. Other areas with a high number of cases are Mahalapye (81) Gaborone (78), Kweneng East (77), Ngami (75) and South East with 54.

A report by Oumer, a public health expert indicated that the Rotavirus has been identified in stool samples from various health districts. Out of 71 stool samples from Gaborone, 41 tested positive to the virus. In Francistown, out of 90 stool samples tested, the virus was found in 57. Out of five samples from Mahalapye, four were positive, while all five samples from Kweneng tested positive for the virus.

Diarrhoea death toll climbs to 67

The diarrhoea death toll has climbed to 67 in the five weeks since the epidemic first hit Botswana.



Addressing a press conference in Gaborone yesterday, acting director in the Department of Public Health, Setshwano Mokgweetsinyana said that his department has so far recorded 67 deaths out of the 5,580 diarrhoea cases reported countrywide.

Mokgweetsinyana said between August 29 and September 4, 19 of the 28 health districts were on high alert regarding the outbreak, while seven of them have since gone below the red alert threshold. Only one health district, Okavango, has not been affected by the outbreak up to now.
