I just meant that the further you go north, the closer the sun
is over the horizon, away from zenit.
Also the norther, the later is the dawn and the earlier the twilight

Kezza, I don't understand how they can connect it with humans.
We can certainly not tell consciously the direction from magnetic
data gathered by our body alone.
Are they suggesting the cows do it subcontiously and we humans
may also be able to do it ?
There must be a clear command from the brain to the feet,
how can it be subconsciously ?

The cows (and maybe humans) may somehow feel better when
they are oriented N-S,
they are unhappy with (magnetic)E-W and try to change it, try to move
when they have this feeling without knowing why ?
I hadn't yet thought about it this way

ahh no, it can't be. Not only would people have missed this "feature" of their
cows since 10000 years, but also the Feng Shui crowd and other scientists failed to
demonstrate this magnetic feature in humans despite presumably considerable efforts

In recent years, a variety of animals have been found which are able to synthesize
the ferromagnetic mineral magnetite (Fe3O4). Lowenstam (1962) originally recognized
biogenic magnetite in the radular teeth of a primitive marine mollusc, the chiton
(Polyplacophora), and since then it has been identified as a precipitate in several
magnetically sensitive organisms, including honey bees (Gould, Kirschvink &
Deffeyes, 1978), homing pigeons (Walcott, Gould & Kirschvink, 1979) and in magnetotactic
bacteria (Frankel, Blakemore & Wolfe, 1979). Zoeger, Dunn & Fuller (1980)

It seems reasonable to me that throughout history, various climatic changes would select out those who successfully adapted to necessary migration, using orientation, navigation, & homing skills - utilizing magnetism.

Summers it's the opposite - earlier dawn and later twilight OR no darkness at all.

Interestingly, it has long been recognized that humans have a bio-energetic field around them that is both detectable and measurable. A whole new medical discipline is growing around the discovery, primarily focusing on the phenomenon with the intent to refine if for use as a diagnostic tool. Elements of this are used in CAT and MRI scan technology.

Think Star Trek medical scanners that are able to instantly diagnose physical ailments.

If an external magnetic field is introduced that affects this natural electromagnetic field that surrounds a living organism, it will distort the bio-energetic field.

There is every reason to suppose that this phenomenon exists in all living things.
I would suspect this observation is in some way linked to it, but don't know enough to speculate on how!

and why did they fail to demonstrate magnetically induced behaviour in humans ?
Can we really expect that there is some human feature which evades scientific detection
but is nevertheless somehow "useful" ?
Why should evolution have established a magnetic detection ability in humans
and then kept it unconscious ? Why not let them detect it consciously ?
Much more useful.

ahh, well, yes. But presumably the karibus or rendeers need their sleep despite of 24-hour sunlight.
And when the sun stands so low and it's cold, that is somehow special.
Were google-earth pictures (Oregon) taken in summer or winter ?

gsgs, there is some experiences made by a french specialist of nuclear about humans and magnetism.
but I don't understand because lot of mathematical equations.

magnetic orientation of birds seems to depend on the right eye.
This is also true for chickens.
Chickens using their right eye could detect magnetism,
but not those using their left eye.

(some)strains of small chickens grown for egg-production
could detect magnetism,
but chickens from another sort, grown for meat-production
couldn't.

about chicks and robot :
do you know this experience with small chickens and their " robot "mom which contained grains.
chicks impregnated by their "robot mom" , were able to influence the behaviour of the robot, by shouting hunger.

no link, it was an old study about animal behaviour. I just know that at
Princeton university they make " experiences" about computer and mental influence, ( it's better than chick and robot ) I ve seen it at TV.

Specifically, the direction of cell<SUP> </SUP>extension immediately after cell division was parallel to the magnetic<SUP> </SUP>field. Migrating animals may imprint on a magnetic signature

One of nature's enchanting mysteries is how marine animals such as sea turtles and salmon cross thousands of miles of ocean but still find their way back to their birthplaces to reproduce.
Researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill have proposed a new theory to help unravel the puzzle. According to their hypothesis, the animals imprint the Earth's unique magnetic signature along a stretch of coast, then retain that information to guide them back there.

Lohmann's experiments involved placing young loggerhead turtles in pools of water surrounded by magnetic coils. When researchers altered the magnetic fields in the water, the turtles changed the direction they were swimming.

"They do, in fact, respond to those different fields," Lohmann said. "This implies they have the sensitivity they would need for magnetic imprinting to occur."

First, magnetic imprinting may guide them back to the general region of their birthplace, Lohmann and his fellow researchers suggest.

Then, at least in the case of salmon, a second navigational mechanism involving sense of smell is used to guide the salmon more precisely to a specific river or even branch of a river.
