Bird flu: Tripura, Mizoram tighten vigil

NEW DELHI: Even as the Tripura and Mizoram Governments tightened vigil along their borders after ?unusual mortality? in poultry population last week, the Union Department of Animal Husbandry said over 3.40 lakh poultry birds were culled in Manipur.
Though the culling operation was over, more stamping out of birds was done during the clean-up and disinfection operations through the municipal areas.
The Central Rapid Response Teams were closely combing the 5-km radius around Chinmeirong village near Imphal.
?This is a time-consuming exercise and we are not taking any chances,? said Animal Husbandry joint secretary, Upma Chawdhry on Sunday.
Compensation paid
The farmers who have lost their poultry were paid compensation. So far more than Rs. 70 lakh had been paid to the affected farmers and the figure was likely to touch over Rs.1 crore, the joint secretary said.
Blood and tissue samples from the areas that reported ?unusual mortality? in Tripura and Mizoram were sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal even though preliminary investigations by veterinary doctors showed that the deaths occurred due to diseases other than avian influenza.
The Tripura Government is reported to have asked the Border Security Force to seal the border with Bangladesh to prevent the movement of poultry.
Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh also share borders with Myanmar, which has also has reported outbreak of bird flu.
