Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga said the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health organizations had sent out numerous warnings about the danger to people all over the world, and Viet Nam was no exception.

The death of a pregnant woman from bird flu four days after being admitted to hospital has raised the public?s concern about the disease. What is more notable is that she did not live in a high risk area and did not eat chicken, but she contracted the virus anyway.

Dr. Nga pointed out, however, that the patient had cooked some chickens and ducks one week before and had thus been in direct contact with the H5N1 virus in the raw meat.

A recent study by health professionals found that healthy poultry could still be harboring the virus. In some areas, the proportion of healthy poultry with H5N1 is as high as 40 percent.

According to the Health Ministry, the virus has not shown any signs of mutating. The Department of Preventive Health and the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology have been observing the few people with bird flu to see if it will mutate, but nothing has happened so far.

Even so, studies of these patients have found that the disease is developing in a more dangerous and complex manner. Previously most human bird flu cases occurred in winter, but this year has seen several fresh cases in the middle of summer.

Moreover, most of the stricken have died very soon after the onset of the disease. In fact, half of the people catching bird flu in recent times have died, whereas the proportion before was 40%.

The Health Ministry will hold a conference in the near future to determine the most appropriate treatment for bird flu in humans.
