5200 fowls culled in Joypurhat

Some 5205 chicken and ducks were culled at Narayanpur village and surrounding areas in Panchbib
upazila following detection of bird flu Saturday night.

The chicken were culled in presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner M Al Amin.

District livestock office sources said as some chicken in Narayanpur village died due to unknown reason on Thursday, he took one of the dead chickens to the livestock disease laboratory at the district headquarters for test.

As the lab detected bird flu virus in the chicken it was sent to the livestock disease laboratory in Dhaka for confirmation. As tests confirmed Avian Influenza in the chicken, a 16-member team led by the Deputy Commissioner was formed to check spread of bird flu . They culled 5205 chickens and ducks in the village and surrounding areas.:tiphat:

DHAKA, June 18 (Reuters) - Bird flu has spread to another district in Bangladesh, forcing authorities to cull 7,000 chickens, officials said on Monday.

The infected chickens were buried after the H5N1 strain of bird flu was detected on two farms in Jaipurhat district, 300 km (188 miles) northwest of the capital, Dhaka.

With the latest cull, about 172,000 chickens have now been slaughtered and more than 1.6 million eggs destroyed on 68 farms in 14 districts since the virus was first detected near Dhaka in March.

There have been no reported cases of human infection.

More than 110,000 farms have been inspected and 133 million chickens vaccinated since the outbreak emerged, a fisheries and livestock ministry statement said.

Bangladesh has more than 125,000 poultry firms producing 250 million broilers and six billion eggs annually.

About four million Bangladeshis are directly or indirectly associated with poultry farming.

DHAKA, June 24 (Reuters) - Health workers in Bangladesh have culled 78,000 chickens over the past six days after bird flu spread to another district in the north of the country, an official said on Sunday.

The H5N1 strain of bird flu was first detected near the capital Dhaka, in central Bangladesh, in March and has since spread to north.districts.

The latest outbreak was reported from three farms in Lalmonirhat district, 400 km (250 miles) northwest of Dhaka, an official said.

"We have culled a huge number of chickens after the virus spread to the new district," said Khalilur Rahman Siddiqui, joint secretary, ministry of fisheries and livestock.

With the latest cull, about 250,000 chickens have now been slaughtered and more than 2.2 million eggs destroyed in 15 districts since March.

There have been no reported cases of human infection.

About four million Bangladeshis are directly or indirectly associated with poultry farming.

Bird flu spreads to northern Bangladesh

DHAKA, June 27 (Reuters) - Bird flu has spread to another district in Bangladesh forcing health and veterinary workers to cull 5,000 chickens, officials said on Wednesday.

The latest case was reported from a village in Thakurgaon district, 500 km (310 miles) northwest of the capital, Dhaka, said Abdul Motalib, a senior officer of the fisheries and livestock ministry.

The H5N1 strain of bird flu was first detected near the capital Dhaka, in central Bangladesh, in March and has since spread to northern districts.

Sixteen out of Bangladesh's 64 districts have been affected by the virus, but there have been no reported cases of human infection.

About four million Bangladeshis are directly or indirectly associated with poultry farming.
