First case of lethal H5N1 bird flu found at Danish poultry farm
Berlin, May 19, IRNA
Germany-Health-Bird Flu
The first case of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza was detected at a poultry farm on the Danish island of Fuenen, DPA cited the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA)as saying on Friday.

At least three birds - two guinea fowl and one peacock - were discovered with the H5N1 virus strain, the Danish agency added.

A total of 100 birds - among them chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl and peacocks - were kept at the farm of which 47 had died.

The DVFA has cordoned off the zone for 10 kilometers and has set up a three kilometer exclusion zone around the farm.

All poultry exports from Fuenen have been stopped by Danish authorities.

Denmark confirms H5N1 bird flu on poultry farm -EU
Thu 18 May 2006 12:17 PM ET

BRUSSELS, May 18 (Reuters) - Denmark has confirmed an outbreak of the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu on a backyard poultry farm on the island of Funen, the European Commission said on Thursday.

The farm consisted of around 100 birds, including laying hens, ducks, geese and peacocks, and was located in the same area in Denmark where cases of H5N1 bird flu occurred in wild birds in March, the Commission said in a statement.

Earlier on Thursday, Denmark halted exports of poultry from Funen. The government said the outbreak might also force Denmark to halt all its poultry exports to some countries, not just those from the island.

Mingus - Thanks for the article. I am sure no one was offended. We are trying to be careful in this speculative time to check extra sources. We have already been burned by using only 1 source for a story.
