Bird-flu alert: 4 Capiz areas at risk of avian influenza
ROXAS City: The Department of Health?s (DOH) central office has identified four areas in Capiz that are most likely at risk to bird flu. These are the towns of Sapian, Sigma, Ivisan and Roxas City.
The monitoring of migratory birds in these areas has been beefed up after a suspected migratory bird-flu carrier was found last week in Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon, said Dr. Leah del Rosario, DOH representative in Capiz.
Forester Rodrigo Diego, Protected Area and Coastal Zone Management head of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-Capiz), said they are conducting regular bird identification and monitoring, bird counting, surveillance of suspected areas and advocacy campaigns in the identified ?red-alert? areas.
In particular, they are conducting the activities in Lonoy in Sapian, Agustin Navarra in Ivisan, Balijuagan and Sibaguan in Roxas City, Binawbawan in Pilar and in the Tinagong Dagat in Pontevedra towns.
In the national level, the government is closely monitoring seaports and airports throughout the country as preparedness strategies to prevent the possible entry of bird flu.
Interagency efforts of the Department of Agriculture, DOH and DENR have been tasked to intensify their activities and maintain a bird flu-free country.
Last year Gov. Vicente Bermejo issued an executive order creating the province?s task force against bird flu.
The province had also put in place the supplies, disinfectants, gadgets and other support facilities in preparation for the possible spread of bird flu.
It has also set aside about P2 million as indemnification fund for small- and large-scale poultry owners or operators.
Meanwhile, the suspected migratory bird-flu carrier found last week in Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon, was a migratory egret that had a leg tag from Tokyo, Japan, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) confirmed.
Dr. Sammy Animas, national avian-flu coordinator of BAI, said Prieto Diaz town has been included on the watchlist of possible bird-flu areas because of the presence of various migratory birds in its mangrove forest.
