Big rain pours on the Big Easy

Heavy rain continues to fall along the Gulf coast from eastern Texas to western Florida including New Orleans.
The Big Easy picked up over 7 inches of rain between 6am Monday and 6am Tuesday with more heavy rain expected into this evening.
Over the past 4 days the city has had over a foot of rain.
The city and several surrounding parishes and counties (in Mississippi) are under a flash flood warning due to the heavy rain falling.
The rain gauge at the international airport has recorded 21.2 inches from December 1 through 8am CST Tuesday. That total makes this the wettest December on record and the 3rd wettest month overall in the New Orleans area.
If another 3 inches of rain falls by the end of the month December, 2009 would become the wettest month on record.
The rain hopefully comes to an end tonight as drier air pushes in from the southern Plains.
However, another heavy rain event is forecast to begin Wednesday night and could last into Friday. By the end of the week New Orleans may establish its wettest month on record with two weeks left in December.
Another area where heavy rain is a concern is near Americus, Georgia.
Several area ponds are so full that water is flowing over the top of their dams.
The dams are being monitored for any failures which would lead to additional flooding.
Heavy rain moving toward that area from Louisiana and Mississippi could make the situation worse this afternoon and evening.
Flash flood watches are posted for much of southern Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southern Alabama and portions of southern Georgia.
