An Outbreak of Dengue Fever in Belize; Ministry of Health on High Alert

An outbreak of dengue fever has been reported, seven months into 2019, and the number of cases so far is already more than twice the figures for the entire 2018. The highest number of persons affected is up north. In the Orange and Corozal Districts, there are over three hundred and fifty laboratory confirmed cases and there is reason to believe that it is a trans-border health issue. The Ministry of Health also confirms cases in Cayo and the Stann Creek Districts, but the spike up north is cause for alarm...

Belize reporting outbreak of dengue fever

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC ? Belize is reporting an outbreak of dengue fever with health authorities saying that the country has so far recorded more cases than it did when there was a record number of just over 600 cases in 2015.

Figures show that for the seven months of this year, the number of cases so far is already more than twice the figures for the entire 2018.

The Ministry of Health said most of the new cases are in the north, with the Orange Walk District reporting the highest number of confirmed cases.

The figures show there are 230 confirmed cases in Orange Walk District with Corozal having approximately 100 cases followed by Stann Creek with 105 cases and Cayo just under 100 cases...

Belize reporting increase in dengue cases

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC ?Belize is report a 10 per cent increase in the number of confirmed dengue fever cases within a one-week period, with 40 per cent of these cases being children.

?We do have an increase from the preliminary data that we have managed to take out. We have 789 confirmed cases which will be a 10 per cent increase average from what we reported exactly one week ago with the Cayo District now having a higher increase in terms of numbers,? said Dr Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services.

He said Corozal, which is located at least nine miles from the border with Mexico, has the second-highest number of dengue cases in terms of total cases.

?We also have an increase particularly in the paediatric population where last week we had said one-third it is now 40 per cent of cases are now in the paediatric population. We were asked last week about mortality cases; we don?t have any in Belize.?

Manzanero said health authorities are aware of severe cases at the Karl Heusner hospital ?and we have 49 of those total 789 cases that are considered to be severe cases of dengue?...

Over 900 confirmed cases of dengue

By BBN Staff: The Office of the Director of Health Services today informed that up to this weekend, there was a total of 950 lab confirmed cases of dengue.

In addition, there are 814 clinical suspected cases for a total of 1,764 cases.

According to the report, last week, the number of confirmed cases spiked to 215 in only one week with 4 districts reporting an increased amount of cases...

Belize reporting decline in dengue fever cases

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Health authorities are reporting a decline in the number of dengue fever cases after the figure had has risen to more than 2,700 cases last month.

While the Director of Health Services Dr Marvin Manzanero did not disclose the present number of cases said “last week’s figure is the lowest for the last eight weeks.

“So the numbers continue to go down. It peaked three to four weeks ago in terms of total numbers, but with the rainy season now fully upon us, we are going to remain vigilant in terms of any potential increase in the number of cases,” he added.

In September, the Office of the Director of Health Services said that up until week 34, “our current data…indicates that the total number of dengue cases now stands at 2,272 cases” noting that “out of the total number, 1,232 were confirmed and 1,040 the diagnosis was made by clinical suspicion”...
