Avian influenza: new contamination of birds in Couvin - Measures (20/06/2017)

The highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza virus was again found, this time, in an amateur breeding of Couvin (Namur). Since 1 June, the virus has been found at 9 locations in Belgium. The AFSCA asks every bird owner and especially those who have recently purchased poultry in the market to be vigilant and to call on a veterinarian if their birds are sick or die suddenly.

A temporary buffer zone with a radius of 3 km was delineated at Couvin. In this area, movements of poultry, other captive birds and hatching eggs are prohibited. All captive birds and poultry must be fed and watered inside. The bird and poultry holders of this zone must send to the burgomaster, within 72 hours, an inventory listing, by species, the number of animals present. This area will be maintained for at least 3 weeks.

Willy Borsus: "I remind you that the sale of birds and poultry on the public markets is prohibited more than ever, as are the other gatherings (exhibitions, contests, sales ...) of poultry. My services conduct the investigation and every new case detected is analyzed scrupulously. It would be catastrophic for the virus to spread among professional breeders. I do not want the poultry sector to be struck by new difficulties. "

The AFSCA also reminds every keeper to be vigilant and immediately call on a veterinarian if their birds show symptoms of illness.

Abnormal mortality in wild birds can always be reported via the toll-free number 0800/99777.

We can reassure the consumer that meat and poultry eggs are wholesome and can be safely eaten.

A case of avian flu in Dailly

Home News - Today 08h48 - Patrick LEMAIRE - L'Avenir
...
This is the ninth case of avian influenza detected in the country. An inhabitant of Dailly found an abnormal mortality among his chickens and alerted his veterinarian. The latter, after analysis, had to go to the obvious: H5N8 decimated well thirty poultry, out of forty, in the small local breeding.

"My client bought around forty day-old chicks at the Chimay market," says Tania Moreau, veterinarian. For seven weeks, nothing abnormal was observed, until the day he welcomed a little abandoned duckling that a person had discovered on a road. That's when the problems started. "

The little duck obviously had the appearance of a Trojan horse. "The chickens started dying one after the other. It was going very fast. My client got rid of the duckling, thinking it was he who brought a virus but it was too late, the evil was there! Finally, some 30 specimens were dead ... "

The analyzes confirmed that it was the H5N8 virus. Afsca confirmed the findings of the analyzes on Tuesday. "We killed all the other poultry," explained Ms. Moreau. It was not easy for their keeper, because the remaining chickens looked healthy but that's the precaution to take. "
