Avian influenza: new contamination of birds in Couvin - Measures (20/06/2017)

The highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza virus was again found, this time, in an amateur breeding of Couvin (Namur). Since 1 June, the virus has been found at 9 locations in Belgium. The AFSCA asks every bird owner and especially those who have recently purchased poultry in the market to be vigilant and to call on a veterinarian if their birds are sick or die suddenly.

A temporary buffer zone with a radius of 3 km was delineated at Couvin. In this area, movements of poultry, other captive birds and hatching eggs are prohibited. All captive birds and poultry must be fed and watered inside. The bird and poultry holders of this zone must send to the burgomaster, within 72 hours, an inventory listing, by species, the number of animals present. This area will be maintained for at least 3 weeks.

Willy Borsus: "I remind you that the sale of birds and poultry on the public markets is prohibited more than ever, as are the other gatherings (exhibitions, contests, sales ...) of poultry. My services conduct the investigation and every new case detected is analyzed scrupulously. It would be catastrophic for the virus to spread among professional breeders. I do not want the poultry sector to be struck by new difficulties. "

The AFSCA also reminds every keeper to be vigilant and immediately call on a veterinarian if their birds show symptoms of illness.

Abnormal mortality in wild birds can always be reported via the toll-free number 0800/99777.

We can reassure the consumer that meat and poultry eggs are wholesome and can be safely eaten.

The analyzes confirmed that it was the H5N8 virus. Afsca confirmed the findings of the analyzes on Tuesday. "We killed all the other poultry," explained Ms. Moreau. It was not easy for their keeper, because the remaining chickens looked healthy but that's the precaution to take. "
