Swine flu claims young California mother

July 13, 3:17 PM

An Antioch woman lost her fight today with cancer and swine flu.*

The 30-year-old mother of a 6-year-old son had fought leukemia once before, but learned recently that it had returned.* While hospitalized this time she became sick with H1N1, and died this afternoon.

Family and friends came from around the state to be with her when she passed.* Her boyfriend and father of their son is understandably devastated.* A bank account will be opened for donations to the young father and son.

I've seen quite a few articles over the weeks that appeared to report hospital-acquired infections, without ever saying so clearly.

Local swine flu victim identified as Monica Chiaradia-Fish of Antioch

As family and friends come to terms with the death of Monica Chiaradia-Fish to swine flu and leukemia, her 7-year-old son has it the hardest. After a day of playing with the children of close friends, once they left, his thoughts and feelings were no longer distracted.

The words he spoke, "I don't want my mommy to go to Heaven, Uncle Chris," cut through everyone within earshot, as well as all those who have heard them repeated. Grief counseling is being arranged for the boy.

Monica's boyfriend Derek Muir, also known as Big-D, is the father of Derek Lawrence Muir, known as Little-d. He and close friends had tattoos done in honor of Monica today.

Monica worked at Antioch's Little Manuel restaurant as a bartender and was a faithful Raiders fan.

Memorial bank account opened for Monica's family

Monica's parents have opened a memorial account at Plumas Bank to help with funeral expenses. Donations can be sent to:
